Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Olive Branch

"What do you want, Julian?" I spat into the phone, my eyes locked on Melissa’s distant figure. She waved at me—a tiny, mocking gesture of her fingers.
"I want what’s mine, Ethan," Julian’s voice purred through the receiver. "And unfortunately for Sarah, that includes my daughter. Lily is a crucial asset for my campaign. The public loves a family man. But they don't love a single mother who associates with... let's call them 'damaged goods.' "
"She's a child, not a political prop!" I growled.
"To you, she's a stranger's kid. To me, she's my blood," Julian said, his tone turning ice-cold. "Here is the deal, Ethan. You walk away from Sarah. You tell the courts that you tried to pursue a relationship with her, but her unstable behavior and paranoia made you fear for your safety. You write that statement, and I make sure your medical records stay buried. You get to keep your quiet, pathetic little life. If you don't..."
He paused, and I heard the low, terrifying chuckle of a man who owned the police department, the judges, and the city.
"...I will ruin you. I will dismantle your architectural firm. I will take your house. And I will still take Lily. You have twenty-four hours."
The line went dead.
I stood there, the phone pressed to my ear, listening to the dial tone. Behind me, Sarah had collapsed onto the sofa, her face buried in her hands, her shoulders shaking with silent, desperate sobs. Lily was still asleep, curled like a small comma on the other end of the couch, completely oblivious to the war being waged over her head.
I walked over to Sarah and knelt in front of her. "Hey. Look at me."
She lifted her tear-stained face. "You have to do it, Ethan. You have to walk away. I can't let him ruin you too. He already destroyed my life. He took my teaching credentials in the city, he forced me to move out here... he won't stop until he wins."
"He's not going to win," I said, a strange, calm certainty settling over me. "And I'm not walking away."
"Why?" Sarah whispered, searching my eyes. "You don't even know us."
"Because two years ago, I let them take everything from me without a fight because I was too broken to stand up," I said, my voice steady. "I let Melissa walk away with my dignity, my home, and my self-worth. I won't let them do it to you. And I won't let them do it to Lily."
We spent the night planning. If Julian wanted a war, we had to play dirty.
The next morning, I called my sister Claire. Within an hour, she arrived at my house, her face pale with fury when she realized how she had been used as an unwitting pawn by Melissa’s social spies.
"I am so sorry, Sarah," Claire cried, hugging her tightly. "I had no idea. I just wanted Ethan to find someone wonderful. I didn't know they were watching."
"We don't have time for apologies," I said, laying out a blueprint of Julian’s latest commercial development project on the dining table. "We need leverage. And I think I know where to find it."
During my marriage, Melissa used to brag about Julian’s 'creative' bookkeeping. She thought it was genius; I knew it was highly illegal. Julian had been using shell companies to fund his campaign and hide toxic environmental liabilities on his construction sites.
"If I can get into his primary office tonight," I said, "I can download the offshore account ledgers."
"That's burglary, Ethan!" Claire gasped.
May you like
"It's not burglary if I have a key," I said, pulling out a tarnished brass key ring. "Melissa never changed the emergency locks on the old firm office we co-owned. Julian’s main campaign headquarters is in that exact building."
CHAPTER 4 HOOK: Just as we finalized the plan, the front door bell rang. I opened it to find two state social workers standing on the porch, flanked by two armed police officers. They held an emergency court order signed by a judge. They were there to remove Lily from Sarah's custody immediately.
