Chapter 6 - The Ultimate Twist (The Final Reckoning)

"Drop the weapon! FBI!"

The command shattered the tension in the room. Julian’s face turned from smug triumph to utter horror in a fraction of a second. He dropped the gun, the heavy metal clattering against the polished hardwood floor. Melissa let out a sharp, terrified shriek, raising her hands in the air.

I let out a breath I felt like I had been holding for two years.

From behind the tactical gear of the federal agents stepped Special Agent Miller, followed by a man in a white lab coat—Dr. Edward Sterling, a renowned fertility specialist in the city.

"Julian Vance, you are under arrest for federal campaign finance fraud, wire fraud, and conspiracy to commit kidnapping," Agent Miller announced, cuffing Julian tightly.

"This is a mistake!" Melissa screamed, her voice cracking as an agent grabbed her arms. "I didn't do anything! It was all him! He made me do it!"

"Save it, Melissa," I said, walking over to her and looking her dead in the eye. "You always did look terrible in red."

But the real drama was just beginning.

Dr. Sterling walked over to me and Sarah, who had just rushed into the room after waiting in the FBI surveillance van outside. She ran straight into my arms, sobbing with relief.

"Sarah," Dr. Sterling said gently, holding up a certified medical document. "I think you need to see this. During the custody investigation, my clinic was subpoenaed to release Julian’s medical records regarding his fertility treatments from seven years ago."

Sarah frowned, wiping her tears. "What do you mean? Julian is Lily's father. We used an anonymous donor program through your clinic because we thought Julian was sterile, but then he claimed he switched the samples..."

"No," Dr. Sterling said solemnly. "He didn't switch the samples. He wanted to, but the lab rejected his sample due to a complete absence of viable genetic material. Julian is, and has always been, completely sterile. He knew this, but he falsified the birth certificate and the clinic records to claim Lily was his biological child so he could secure his grandfather's thirty-million-dollar inheritance."

The room went dead silent.

"Then... who is Lily's biological father?" Sarah whispered, her heart hammering against her ribs.

Dr. Sterling looked at me, a strange, profound smile on his face. He handed me the genetic matching profile from the donor database.

"Seven years ago, Ethan, you were struggling to pay for your sister Claire's medical bills after her accident. You made three anonymous donations to our university clinic."

My jaw dropped. The room seemed to tilt on its axis.

I looked at the document. The donor code matched my old student medical ID perfectly.

"The biological father," Dr. Sterling said, "is you, Ethan."

I choked back a sob, my eyes flying to Sarah. She was staring at me, her hands covering her mouth, her eyes overflowing with a mixture of sheer shock, disbelief, and a beautiful, radiant joy.

"Ethan..." she whispered.

"She has my eyes," I breathed, the memory of Lily's bright brown eyes flashing in my mind. "She has my sister's uneven braids. She... she's my daughter."

Three Months LaterThe sun was setting over the lake, casting a warm, golden glow over the backyard of my newly renovated home.

Cooper was chasing a tennis ball across the grass, his tail wagging furiously. Sitting on the porch steps was Sarah, wearing a simple sundress, her laughter echoing in the quiet evening air as she watched Lily—wearing her favorite purple jacket and sparkly shoes—trying to teach Cooper how to do a trick.

Julian Vance and Melissa were currently awaiting trial in a federal penitentiary, their empire completely dismantled. The thirty-million-dollar trust had been legally secured for Lily's future, under the sole guardianship of Sarah and myself.

Lily ran up to the porch, holding a drawing she had made.

"Look, Ethan! I drew us!"

I knelt down, taking the drawing. It was a picture of three people holding hands under a big, bright yellow sun. A tall man, a beautiful woman, and a little girl with uneven braids. And next to them, a big golden dog.

"It's beautiful, Lily," I said, my voice thick with emotion.

"Can I call you Daddy now?" she asked, her big brown eyes looking up at me with absolute trust.

I looked up at Sarah, who was smiling through her tears, nodding gently.

May you like

I pulled Lily into a tight hug, burying my face in her hair. "Yes, sweetie. You can call me Daddy."

The blind date I thought stood me up hadn't just given me a second chance at love. She had brought my daughter home.
