Chapter 3 - THE VAULT OF SECRETSThe heavy steel door didn't just swing open; it was shoved violently from within, striking the drywall with a thunderous CRASH that sent plaster dust raining down onto the carpet.

María dropped into a low combat stance, her Sig Sauer trained directly on the black void of the open vault. Her finger rested lightly on the trigger, sweat stinging her eyes.
"Stay back! Hands where I can see them!" she screamed, her voice echoing off the concrete walls of the hidden room.
The darkness inside the vault smelled like a mix of industrial bleach, copper, and damp earth—the stench of a subterranean tomb hidden beneath a suburban dream home. And then, a shadow detached itself from the gloom.
A small hand reached out, grabbing the edge of the steel doorframe.
Then another hand.
And finally, a little face stepped into the beam of María’s flashlight.
It was a little girl, roughly the same age as Emily. She wore a faded blue nightgown covered in faded stars. Her arms were covered in faint, healed scars and fresh bruises, and her eyes—wide, hollow, and utterly devoid of childhood light—stared straight past María as if she wasn't even there.
"She... she told me the snake was sleeping," the little girl whispered, her voice like dry leaves scraping across pavement. "Is Daddy gone?"
María felt her knees buckle slightly. She holstered her weapon instantly, lunging forward to wrap her arms around the shivering child, pulling her out of the freezing vault and into the warmth of the bedroom.
"You're safe. You're out. What's your name, sweetie?" María choked out, her voice trembling for the first time all night.
"Chloe," the girl whispered, leaning her head against María's tactical vest. "Chloe Vance. I lived in Peoria before the bad man brought me here in the dark truck."
Downstairs, the front door flew open as backup units—led by Captain Vance and a full tactical team—poured into the house. Sirens wailed outside on Maplewood Drive, casting flashing red and blue strobes across the living room walls.
Daniel slammed Thomas Miller face-first onto the hood of a cruiser outside, slapping a second set of heavy steel cuffs on him just to be safe.
"You think you won?" Thomas screamed, spitting blood onto the manicured lawn as flashbulbs from neighbors' smartphones began to flicker in the dark. "You don't even know what’s buried in the backyard! You don't know what’s under the patio!"
Daniel didn't answer. He turned his head toward the house, watching as paramedics rushed through the front door with stretchers and medical kits.
He tapped his shoulder mic. "María, status? Do you have Emily and the other child?"
There was a long, agonizing pause of static over the radio.
May you like
Then, María’s voice came back, sounding faint, terrified, and breathless.
"Daniel... you need to get back upstairs right now. Chloe just told me something about the 'snake' that changes everything. Thomas Miller didn't build this vault alone. He had an accomplice."
