Chapter 7 - THE TRIAL OF THE MONSTERSSix months later, the Sangamon County Courthouse was surrounded by a sea of satellite trucks, reporters, and angry citizens holding signs that read JUSTICE FOR EMILY AND CHLOE and PROTECT OUR CHILDREN.
Inside courtroom 4B, the atmosphere was thick with tension.
Thomas Miller and Sarah Miller sat at the defense table in orange jumpsuits, their wrists and ankles shackled to heavy steel floor brackets. They no longer wore the masks of respectable suburban parents. Their hair was unkempt, their faces gaunt, and their eyes cast downward to avoid the harsh glare of the gallery.
Judge Arthur Sterling sat behind the mahogany bench, his face a mask of judicial granite.
"Thomas Miller, Sarah Miller," Judge Sterling's voice echoed through the silent courtroom. "You have been found guilty on all counts: human trafficking, kidnapping, conspiracy, child exploitation, and operating an international criminal enterprise."
The judge paused, his gavel resting heavily in his right hand.
"In my thirty years on the bench, I have never witnessed such calculated, monstrous depravity hidden behind the facade of ordinary domestic life. You turned a home into a slaughterhouse of innocence. May God have mercy on your souls, because this court certainly will not."
BANG!
The gavel struck the sounding block like a thunderclap.
"I sentence Thomas Miller to five consecutive life terms without the possibility of parole, plus an additional eighty years in federal maximum-security confinement. I sentence Sarah Miller to four consecutive life terms without the possibility of parole."

A collective sigh of profound relief swept through the courtroom gallery.
In the front row, sitting beside Officer María López and Dispatcher Claire Johnson, little Emily wore a bright yellow dress and smiled for the first time in six months. She held her stuffed rabbit tightly in her lap, but this time, she wasn't hiding behind it. She was looking straight ahead, toward the bright, open sunlight streaming through the courthouse windows.
