Chapter 1 - THE ASHES OF DAWN

The early morning air felt like cold water slapped against my face as I stepped out onto 5th Avenue. My thrift-store silver dress swished against my ankles, a noisy, glaring sign of a fantasy that was already evaporating into the dawn mist.
I checked my phone: 5:42 AM. Twenty-three dollars in checking, two dollars in my coat pocket, and an ache in my chest that had nothing to do with tiredness.
I had left the silver mask on Julian’s nightstand. A clean break, I told myself as the subway screeched into the station. No names, no promises, no trace.
Except I was wrong. I had left the ultimate trace.
When I unlocked the door to my cramped Crown Heights studio apartment, my best friend Cassie was sitting on the couch wrapped in a fleece blanket, staring blankly at her laptop screen.
"Nora?" she gasped, bolting upright. "Where the hell have you been? Your phone was dead!"
"I stayed," I whispered, collapsing onto the faded armchair. "Cassie... I stayed with him."
"With who? The guy in the black half-mask?" Cassie grabbed her laptop and turned the screen toward me. "Nora, look at this. It’s trending everywhere on X and Instagram."
My stomach plummeted into a cold abyss.
On the screen was a crisp, high-definition photo taken on the balcony of the Sterling Manor. It showed me—wearing the pearl-trimmed silver mask—laughing into the chest of a man whose jawline could cut glass. But it wasn’t just any photo. It was a scandal piece published by The Manhattan Ledger at 4:00 AM.
HEADLINE: The Phantom Heiress? Mystery Woman Enchants Billionaire Recluse Julian Vance at Sterling Masquerade.
"Julian Vance?" My voice cracked.
"Nora..." Cassie’s eyes were wide with panic. "Do you know who Julian Vance is? He isn't just rich. He’s the CEO of Vance Global Logistics—the man who bought out Sterling Enterprises last month. He hasn't appeared at a public event in three years. Not since his fiancée vanished."
My mind reeled. Freedom mid-transit. The way his hands had felt at my waist. The quiet intensity in his eyes. He wasn't just a mysterious rich stranger. He was the most dangerous bachelor in New York’s elite circle, a man surrounded by shadows and rumors of corporate sabotage.
Before I could process the headline, a loud, authoritative knock rattled my front door.
Cassie and I froze.
"Nora Calloway?" a booming voice called out from the hallway. "Open up. We know you're in there."
I crept toward the door and looked through the peephole. Standing in the dimly lit corridor were two men in tailored charcoal suits, holding dark leather folders. Behind them stood an older woman with sharp cheekbones and icy blue eyes—Mrs. Ruth Sterling.
I pulled the door open, keeping the chain latch on. "Mrs. Sterling? What is going on?"

Ruth Sterling didn't smile. The warm, lavender-latte-loving grandmother from The Copper Bell was gone. In her place was the matriarch of a crumbling empire.
"Unlatch the door, Nora," Ruth said coldly. "We need to talk about the mask you left in Julian Vance’s bed. Because as of twenty minutes ago... it just linked you to a murder."
