Chapter 4 - The Truth Behind the Scars

The next morning, the sun beat down mercilessly on the gravel driveway of Ignacio’s modest home on the outskirts of Guadalajara. Roberto, Carmen, and their youngest brother, Javier—who had been too hungover to even answer his phone the previous night—arrived at the exact same time. Their faces were pale, dark circles under their eyes.
They expected to find their father alone and vulnerable. Instead, the entire perimeter of the house was lined with thirty gleaming motorcycles. The bikers stood like sentinels, arms crossed, glinting silver rings catching the sunlight.
Roberto swallowed hard, stepping forward. "We need to see our father. Let us through."
El Chivo stepped out from the front door, lighting a cigar. He blew a plume of smoke into Roberto's face. "The old man is busy signing papers. You can wait."
"Listen to me, you thug!" Carmen shrieked, her voice cracking with desperation. "I don't know what kind of scam you're running on our dad, but he doesn't have any money! He lives on a tiny pension! Whatever you're trying to steal, it doesn't exist!"
El Chivo let out a dark, booming laugh that made the siblings flinch. "You really are blind, aren't you? You thought your mother and father lived in this simple house because they were poor? Your father is Don Ignacio Vargas. Do you idiots even know who founded the massive agricultural and logistics conglomerate that controls half the shipping lines in this country before retiring thirty years ago?"
The siblings froze. The name Vargas Logistics was legendary. It was a multi-billion-dollar empire that had gone completely dark from public view decades ago when its founder chose a life of quiet humility.

"No..." Roberto whispered, his knees turning to jelly. "No, he gave that up. He told us he sold it for nothing."
"He put it in a blind trust," El Chivo spat, stepping down from the porch, his towering frame overshadowing Roberto. "He wanted to raise children who valued family over fortune. He wanted to see if you would love an ordinary old man. But you treated him like trash. You left him to rot on his birthday. And worst of all? You broke his heart. Now, he’s going to break your wallets."
