Chapter 4 - The True Mastermind (The History of the Rattle)

"You forgot who dug the foundation of the house you were bragging about."

Daniel fell into a chair, burying his face in his hands. "How could you do this to me? I am your only son. Everything I did, I did to make the Vance name proud! I built this company from a prototype in our garage!"

I walked over to him, stepping over his discarded briefcase. "You built it? With what money, Daniel?"

I reached into my pocket and placed the silver rattle on the table. It made a sharp, metallic clink.

"Do you know what this is?" I asked.

Daniel stared at it, confused. "An old baby toy."

"This rattle was given to your father by his grandfather. It is solid sterling silver, but its real value is what it represents. When your father died, he left us with nothing but debt and this rattle. When you wanted to go to Harvard, I didn't just sell my wedding ring. I went to a man named Marcus Vance—your father’s estranged, wealthy uncle."

Daniel’s eyes widened. "Uncle Marcus? You told me he died broke!"

"I told you that so you wouldn't grow up lazy," I said, my voice hardening. "Marcus saw the silver rattle and remembered his brother. He agreed to fund your education and your first startup, but under one strict condition: the money would be funneled through a holding company controlled entirely by me. He wanted to ensure that if you ever became arrogant, if you ever forgot the blood and sweat that built this family, I would have the power to take it all back."

I leaned in close, looking into my son's panicked eyes. "I worked those night shifts not because we were poor, Daniel, but because I wanted to see if you would notice. I wore that old coat to the hospital to see if my son loved me, or if he only loved the prestige I provided. You failed the test."

Just then, Daniel’s phone buzzed with a text message from Vanessa. He picked it up automatically. The text read: [Daniel! The bank just repossessed my credit cards at the boutique! If you don't fix this right now, I’m taking the baby and going to my mother’s! You are worthless!]

Daniel stared at the screen, a horrific realization dawning on him. Vanessa didn't love him. She loved the empire his mother had built.

Chapter 4 Hook: "Mom, please," Daniel wept, reaching for my hand. "She'll leave me. She'll take my son away." I pulled my hand back. "She already took him away from me, Daniel. Now, you get to see what she's really worth."
