Chapter 5 - The Bitter Cold of Reality (The Ultimate Test)

"When the money vanishes, so does the love."
Two weeks passed. The drama had become the talk of the town, trending across social media platforms under whispered headlines of a fallen tycoon. Daniel and Vanessa were forced to move into a cramped, leaky one-bedroom apartment in the worst part of the city—the only place they could afford with the small amount of cash Vanessa had hidden away.
Vanessa’s true colors bloomed like a toxic weed.
"Look at this place!" she screamed, throwing a cheap plastic bottle at Daniel. "There's no central heating! My skin is breaking out! The baby won't stop crying! Why haven't you begged your mother for forgiveness yet?!"
Daniel, now wearing a stained, faded t-shirt, looked exhausted. He had spent the last fourteen days trying to apply for jobs, but no firm would hire the disgraced ex-CEO who had been publicly disowned for elder abuse.
"I tried, Vanessa!" Daniel shouted back, his voice hoarse. "She won't take my calls! Her security blocks me at the office! And frankly, why should she forgive us? You pushed her! You called her filthy!"
"I was protecting our son!" Vanessa yelled, her eyes flashing with malice. "She looked like a beggar! If she wanted respect, she should have worn her designer clothes! It’s her fault we’re in this mess!"
Suddenly, a knock echoed through the thin wooden door.
Vanessa rushed to open it, hoping it was a delivery or a lawyer offering a settlement. Instead, it was a process server. He handed her a stack of legal documents.
"Vanessa Vance?" the man asked. "You’re being served."
Vanessa opened the packet, her breath catching. It wasn’t from me. It was a lawsuit from the St. Jude Luxury Hospital group, demanding $50,000 for damages to the VIP suite and unpaid medical fees, alongside a civil suit filed by Miriam Cole for personal injury and defamation on behalf of Evelyn Vance.
Right behind the process server stood two police officers.

"Mrs. Vance," one officer said, producing a pair of handcuffs. "We have a warrant for your arrest for the physical assault of Evelyn Vance, captured on hospital security footage."
Chapter 5 Hook: Vanessa shrieked, backing away, looking at Daniel. "Daniel, protect me! Tell them I didn't push her!" But Daniel just sat on the broken mattress, folded his arms, and gave the police a slow, expressionless nod.
