Chapter 11 - The Inheritance of Trust

The morning air smelled of wet pine and damp earth as the police cruisers slowly wound their way down the estate’s long gravel drive. Down below, federal agents were loading Marcus and his remaining conspirators into transport vans, systematically dismantling a web of corporate corruption that had bled Ashworth Industries from the inside out for years.
Inside the mansion’s sprawling conservatory, Darra stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass panes, watching the flashing red and blue lights fade into the distance. Her head still throbbed faintly where she had struck the metal hood of the van, but the physical pain was nothing compared to the seismic shift in her reality. She was no longer just Darra Whitmore, the disgraced former housekeeper of the Grand Horizon.
"You're quiet this morning," a low voice murmured behind her.
Aiden stepped into the conservatory, holding two cups of black coffee. He extended one toward her, his expression a mix of lingering exhaustion and a fragile, quiet ease she had never seen on him before.
"Just thinking about how fast a life can change," Darra said, taking the ceramic mug. Her fingers brushed his, and a stray spark of static electricity seemed to jump between them, making her pull back slightly. "One minute I’m stripping hotel sheets, and the next I’m dodging bullets in a billionaire’s secret bunker."
"You earned every bit of peace coming your way," Aiden said, leaning against the glass beside her. He looked out over the manicured lawns. "The board met via emergency conference call an hour ago. Marcus’s assets have been frozen, and the internal audit confirmed every suspicion we had. But the company needs restructuring from the ground up. I need someone I can trust completely."

Darra turned her head sharply, staring at him. "Aiden, don't even finish that sentence. I don't know the first thing about corporate restructuring or defense contracts. I know how to clean a room and how to survive."
"You know human nature," Aiden countered, his glacial blue eyes locking onto hers with absolute conviction. "And you know loyalty. That’s something money can’t buy, and it’s the only asset that matters right now."
