Chapter 5 - The Secret Language

Chloe didn't hesitate. She dropped her stuffed rabbit, sprinted across the Persian rug, and threw her arms around Darra’s waist, burying her face in Darra’s jacket.

Darra’s defensive posture instantly melted. She dropped to her knees, wrapping her arms tightly around the little girl, pressing a gentle kiss to the top of her soft brown hair. "Hey, sweet girl," Darra whispered, tears pricking the corners of her eyes. "I missed you."

Aiden watched them from above, his expression shifting through a complex storm of emotions—shock, vulnerability, and a profound, aching relief. He slowly lowered himself to one knee beside them.

"She hasn't spoken a word since the fire," Aiden said quietly, his voice losing its sharp corporate edge. "She hasn't let anyone touch her except me. Not her therapists, not her nurses. But she remembered you."

Darra looked up at him, her eyes flashing with a mix of sympathy and lingering resentment. "She’s deaf, Mr. Ashworth. When I found her in that room, she was terrified because she couldn't hear the alarms. She was entirely trapped in her own head."

"I know," Aiden muttered, looking down at his daughter with a heavy weight of guilt. "I was across town at an emergency board meeting. Security systems failed. The smoke detectors in her wing malfunctioned because of a corrupted mainframe update... an update my own company pushed out."

Darra caught her breath. "You think someone did it on purpose?"

Aiden didn't answer immediately, but the dangerous shadow that flickered across his face confirmed her worst suspicion. The fire wasn't an accident. It was an assassination attempt disguised as a mechanical failure, aimed straight at the billionaire's heir.

"They missed," Aiden said, his voice dropping to a lethal whisper. "And now they know you saw something, or at least, you were there. Which means you are no longer safe out there, Ms. Whitmore."

"What are you talking about?" Darra asked, her heart hammering against her ribs.

"I'm talking about the fact that your apartment was broken into twenty minutes after you left the bank," Marcus interjected, stepping briskly into the study with a shattered tablet in his hand. "Professional sweep. They’re looking for you, Aiden. Or anyone connected to that night."

Darra stared between Marcus and Aiden, the ground suddenly dropping out from beneath her feet. She had thought losing her job was the worst thing that could happen to her. She had no idea she had just walked straight into the crosshairs of a corporate war.
