Chapter 16 - The Unspoken Truth

An hour later, the underground garage was swarming with federal marshals and police cars. Arthur Vance and his co-conspirators were hauled away in separate cruisers, their corporate empire crumbling into dust.

Aiden insisted on driving Darra back to the estate himself. The ride in the back of the Maybach was completely silent, save for the hum of the engine and the steady patter of rain against the bulletproof windows.

When they arrived at the mansion, Chloe was already fast asleep in her nursery, guarded by two trusted residential security details. Aiden led Darra into his private study, poured two glasses of scotch, and handed one to her.

"You should have called me," Aiden said quietly, standing by the fireplace as the orange flames flickered across his face. "You shouldn't have gone down to the archives alone."

"I didn't plan on walking into a conspiracy," Darra fired back, though her voice lacked its usual sharp edge. She took a sip of the scotch, letting the burn settle her nerves. "I just wanted the fiscal records, Aiden. I wanted to prove I was worth my place on that board."

Aiden turned around, his glacial blue eyes softening as he looked at her. He stepped across the room, closing the distance between them until he was standing only inches away.

"You don't have to prove anything to anyone, Darra," Aiden said softly, his voice dropping to an intimate whisper. "From the moment you carried my daughter out of that burning hotel, you proved everything that matters."

Darra looked up into his eyes. The space between them felt charged, electric, impossible to ignore. For weeks, they had danced around the heavy wall of their different worlds—the billionaire executive and the former hotel housekeeper. But in the quiet warmth of the study, those labels dissolved into nothing.

Aiden reached out, his warm fingers gently brushing a stray lock of hair away from her forehead, his thumb tracing the faint scar where she had hit her head in the quarry.

Darra’s breath hitched. She didn't pull away.

When Aiden leaned down and pressed his lips softly against hers, the world outside—the corporate betrayal, the threats, the ghosts of the fire—simply ceased to exist. It was a kiss born of shared survival, unspoken understanding, and a deep, undeniable pull that neither of them could fight any longer.
