Chapter 3 - The Shadow at the Gates

Darra lasted four days before reality beat her down. The landlord threatened eviction, the electric company sent a final shut-off notice, and her empty stomach made every movement feel like wading through wet cement. Pride doesn't pay for insulin or rent.
Reluctantly, she took the check down to the corner branch of the Sterling Trust Bank. The teller took the paper, scanned it, and her eyes went wide. She excused herself for five agonizing minutes before returning flanked by a branch manager in a crisp suit.
"Ms. Whitmore," the manager said, his voice dropping to a nervous whisper as he ushered her into a private glass office. "This instrument is drawn from a private, high-tier corporate account. May I ask your relationship to the drawer, Mr. Aiden Ashworth?"
"None," Darra said stiffly. "He’s just a guy whose kid I helped."
The manager looked skeptical, but the funds cleared instantly. Within twenty minutes, Darra walked out of the bank with a thick stack of cash in her worn leather bag. She paid her back rent, bought a week’s worth of actual groceries, and treated herself to a hot meal at a diner down the street.
As she sat in the vinyl booth chewing a cold BLT, she noticed a sleek, matte-black SUV idling across the street. Its tinted windows were pitch black, but she could feel someone staring at her. A chill prickled down her spine. She dropped twenty dollars on the table and hurried out the back exit.
She didn’t make it home.
Two men in dark suits stepped out from the alleyway beside the diner, cutting off her path. They weren't aggressive, but they moved with a silent, terrifying efficiency.
"Ms. Whitmore," the taller one said—the same man with the streak of gray hair from the hotel courtyard. "Mr. Ashworth requests the pleasure of your company."
"I cash his check, we’re even," Darra snapped, backing up against the brick wall. "I told your boss I don't want any trouble."
May you like
"This isn't a request, Ms. Whitmore," the gray-haired man said quietly, opening the rear door of an identical black SUV that pulled up soundlessly beside them. "Mr. Ashworth wants to ensure you understand the terms of your agreement. And frankly... someone knows you cashed that check. People are starting to ask questions about who received a payout from Ashworth Industries."
Darra's blood ran cold. Before she could scream or run, a heavy hand gently but firmly guided her into the vehicle. The door slammed shut, locking automatically, and the SUV melted into the heavy city traffic.
