Chapter 20 - The Final Reckoning and the Dawn

Aiden stopped mid-sentence as Darra walked out onto the center of the stage. The thousands of people in the audience murmured in confusion, cameras flashing brightly from the press pit.
"Darra?" Aiden asked, lowering the microphone, his brow furrowing with sudden concern as he saw the pale, terrified look on her face. "What is it? What's wrong?"
Darra walked up to the podium, her hands shaking so violently she could barely hold the folded piece of paper containing the forced confession. She looked out at the sea of faces, then up at Aiden, whose eyes were filled with absolute, unconditional trust.
She couldn't do it. She couldn't frame the man who had given her a home, a family, and a heart she thought was dead.
Instead of reading the paper, Darra looked straight into the live broadcast camera lens at the front of the stage.
"My name is Darra Whitmore," she spoke clearly, her voice echoing through the massive hall. "Six weeks ago, I was a housekeeper at the Grand Horizon Hotel. I carried a little deaf girl out of a burning building because no one else would. And today, someone sitting in this audience thinks they can blackmail me into lying to destroy the only man who ever treated me like a human being."
Up in the lighting booth high above the auditorium, a man in a black jacket panicked, slamming his hand down onto a digital detonator console.
Pop.
Sparks flew from the overhead lighting rig, and a heavy steel support cable suddenly snapped, crashing down directly toward the stage where Aiden and Darra stood.
"Aiden, look out!" Darra screamed.
With a burst of pure adrenaline, Darra lunged forward, shoving Aiden hard out of the path of the falling metal beam. The heavy steel crashed onto the stage with a deafening roar, pinning Darra’s shoulder beneath its weight.
"Darra!" Aiden shouted in absolute horror, dropping to his knees beside her.
Before the chaos in the auditorium could erupt into a full panic, the side doors burst open. Marcus’s former second-in-command—the hidden mastermind who had placed the call—attempted to slip out through the side exit, only to be tackled violently to the floor by an entire squad of federal agents led by state tactical units. The trap had backfired completely; Aiden’s security team had traced the blackmail call the moment it connected.
Twenty minutes later, the stage was cleared, and the paramedics were carefully lifting the steel beam off Darra’s shoulder.
She sat up on the stretcher, wincing slightly in pain, her clothes dusty and torn once again. But as she looked up, she didn't see flashing lights or burning ruins.
Aiden was kneeling beside the stretcher, taking her hand in his, his eyes shining with unshed tears and a fierce, unbreakable devotion.
"You're an absolute menace, Darra Whitmore," Aiden whispered, a thick, emotional catch in his voice as he pressed a tender kiss to her knuckles. "You save my daughter, and now you keep saving me."

Darra offered a tired, genuine smile, squeezing his hand back tightly. "Well, Mr. Ashworth... I told you I don't run from fires anymore."
And as the morning cameras flashed one last time, capturing the final, unbroken dawn of their new lives, Darra knew she would never have to run alone again.
