Chapter 1 - The Nightmare Crawling Inside

The flickering flame of the kerosene lamp cast distorted shadows across the stone walls as Carmen froze, her breath catching in her throat. Deep within Mateo’s swollen ear canal, the glistening, segmented black mass shifted again. It wasn't a disease. It was alive. A horrific, parasitic centipede-like creature had burrowed into his head, its tiny legs scraping against his eardrum, driving him to the brink of madness.

Mateo let out another guttural, muffled groan, his massive body convulsing on the floor. Blood mixed with a foul, yellowish fluid began to trickle down his jawline. Carmen knew that if she didn't act immediately, the creature would pierce his brain.

"Stay still, Mateo! Please, stay still!" she cried out, forgetting for a moment that he couldn't hear her.

Panic surged through her, but so did a fierce, unexpected wave of protectiveness. This man, whispered to be a monster by the villagers, had treated her with more dignity in twelve days than her own family had in twenty-four years. He had given her a safe roof, a bed of her own, and had never forced himself upon her. She could not let him die.

Rushing to the kitchen, she grabbed a bottle of high-proof mezcal and a pair of long, rusted sewing tweezers. Returning to his side, she poured a few drops of the harsh alcohol directly into his ear to stun the creature. Mateo buckled, his eyes rolling back in sheer agony as the parasite thrashed violently against the burning liquid.

With trembling fingers, Carmen lowered the tweezers into the canal. The stench of copper and decay was overwhelming. She gripped the slick, rubbery tail of the creature and pulled.

Snap.

The creature bit down deeper, tearing into Mateo's flesh. He screamed—a raw, terrifying sound that tore through the silent mountain night—before his eyes closed and his body went completely limp. He had passed out from the pain. Realizing she only had one more chance before it disappeared forever into his skull, Carmen braced her knees against his shoulders, took a deep breath, wedged the tweezers deeper than she thought possible, and yanked with all her might.

With a sickening squelch, a six-inch-long, multi-legged black centipede was ripped from his head, writhing furiously in the tweezers. Carmen shrieked, flinging the monstrosity into the burning hot glass of the kerosene lamp, where it sizzled and died.

She collapsed beside her unconscious husband, weeping from pure adrenaline. But as she wiped the remaining blood from his ear, she noticed something else. The parasite had cleared a blockage that had been there for years. Deep inside, she saw old, silver scar tissue—and a strange, unnatural metallic glint.
