Chapter 6 - The Ultimate Twist

Three months later, the mountain ranch was unrecognizable. The old stone house had been beautifully renovated, surrounded by blooming flowers and thriving agave plants. The Vargas family had been stripped of their stolen assets, and Mateo was officially recognized as the rightful owner of the vast valley lands.

The village that had once mocked Carmen now looked at her with immense respect as the woman who ran the largest agricultural cooperative in Jalisco.

One quiet evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in brilliant shades of pink and gold, Mateo and Carmen stood on the porch, holding hands.

"I never asked you," Carmen murmured, leaning her head against his broad shoulder, finally feeling beautiful, loved, and completely secure. "That creature in your ear... the doctor who hurt you twenty years ago couldn't have put a living insect inside your head back then. It would have died. How did it get there?"

Mateo looked down at her, a mysterious, gentle smile playing on his lips. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, empty glass jar with air holes poked into the metal lid.

Carmen frowned, her heart skipping a beat. "Mateo... what is that?"

"Twenty years ago, the doctor put a silver plug deep in my ear canal to block my hearing," Mateo explained softly. "Over the years, the skin grew over it. No tool could reach it without destroying my brain. I knew it was there, but I couldn't get it out."

He took her hands in his. "The night before our thirteenth day, I found that specific parasitic centipede in the fields. I knew its biology. I knew it was attracted to the warmth of the ear and would secrete an acid that softens tissue and bone. I placed it in my own ear, Carmen. I risked my life, knowing the pain would either kill me or force open the canal."

Carmen stared at him, her jaw dropping in absolute shock. "You... you put it in there yourself? But why didn't you just ask a doctor in the city?"

"Because the Vargas family watched my every move. If I went to a city hospital, I would have been killed before I reached the operating table," Mateo whispered, his eyes filling with deep emotion. "But more than that... I needed to know if I could trust you. I needed to know if the woman they sold to me was just another pawn of the village, or if she was the brave, fiercely loyal soul I suspected she was from the moment I saw her at the altar."

He knelt down before her, kissing her hands tenderly. "You saved me, Carmen. Not just from the pain, but from the silence. You gave me a reason to fight."
