Chapter 3 - The Wolves at the Door
Carmen peeked through the wooden shutters. A sleek, expensive black pickup truck had parked in the dusty yard, kicking up a cloud of debris. Two men stepped out. One was her older brother, Ramiro, wearing a smug, arrogant grin. The other was Alejandro Vargas, the ruthless, cold-eyed son of the town's landowner—the man who held her father’s debt.
"Mateo! Get out here, you mute freak!" Ramiro yelled, spitting on the ground.
"Stay inside," Mateo commanded Carmen, his voice dropping to a low, authoritative register. He motioned for her to act normal, to pretend he was still the deaf, helpless man they thought he was. He grabbed his notebook and pencil, stepping out onto the porch with a hollow, blank expression.
Carmen watched through the cracks of the door, her heart hammering against her ribs.
"Ah, there he is. The beast of the mountain," Alejandro sneered, stepping onto the porch and tossing a heavy leather pouch at Mateo’s feet. "We're renegotiating our little deal, Silva."
Mateo picked up the notebook and wrote: What do you want?
Ramiro laughed brutally. "We want the girl back, Mateo. Or rather, Alejandro wants her. We found a wealthier buyer from Guadalajara who is willing to pay triple what you paid to clear our father's debt. We’re returning your 85,000 pesos. Give us Carmen, and you can go back to rotting in your silence."
Behind the door, Carmen’s world crumbled. Her own brother had come to sell her a second time, like cattle. Tears of humiliation stung her eyes, and her old insecurities screamed that she was worthless.
Alejandro stepped closer to Mateo, poking a mocking finger into his chest. "You're a subhuman, Mateo. You can't love her. You can't even hear her cry. Sign the divorce papers we brought, or my men will burn this ranch to the ground with you inside it. You won't hear the fire coming anyway."
Mateo stared at Alejandro, his face a mask of perfect, terrifying calm. He slowly lowered his notebook. He didn't write. Instead, he looked past them, straight into the house, looking directly at Carmen through the crack in the door.
Then, he looked back at Alejandro, and a dark, dangerous smile spread across his face. He didn't use the notebook. He just stood there, letting them believe they had the upper hand, playing the fool while recording every single word they said in his newly restored memory. He nodded slowly, pretending to agree to sign the papers the following day at the town hall.

The moment the truck sped away, Mateo stormed back inside. He found Carmen sobbing on the floor. He didn't hesitate; he knelt down and wrapped his massive arms around her, pulling her tight against his chest.
"They will never take you," Mateo vowed fiercely into her hair. "Tomorrow, we go to town. But we aren't signing papers. We are bringing down an empire."
