Chapter 4 - The Masterstroke at Town Hall

The next morning, the town square of Los Altos was bustling. Rumors had spread like wildfire that the "Deaf Man on the Hill" was coming to return his bought wife because she was "defective." A crowd had gathered outside the municipal building, eager for a public spectacle.

Carmen walked beside Mateo, her head held high despite the cruel whispers and snickers from the villagers. She wore the same white wedding dress, but this time, she didn't feel suffocated by it. She felt fueled by rage. Mateo walked with a heavy, slow gait, playing his role perfectly, staring blankly ahead.

Inside the grand office, Alejandro Vargas sat behind a large mahogany desk, flanked by Carmen’s father, Don Arturo, and Ramiro. A corrupt local notary stood by, holding the legal documents.

"Ah, the happy couple," Alejandro mocked, sliding the papers forward. "Sign here, dummy. Let's get this over with."

Don Arturo wouldn't even look Carmen in the eye. "It’s for the best, daughter. You don't belong on a mountain anyway."

Mateo took the pen. He looked at the paper, then looked up at Alejandro. The entire room fell into a tense, suffocating silence.

Suddenly, Mateo tossed the pen across the room. It clattered against the wall.

"What the hell are you doing?" Ramiro snapped, stepping forward. "Sign it!"

Mateo leaned over the desk, placing both hands flat on the mahogany. He looked directly at Alejandro, his eyes burning with twenty years of suppressed fury.

"I don't think I will," Mateo said. His voice was no longer raspy; it boomed through the high-ceilinged room like thunder.

Don Arturo gasped, dropping his cigar. Ramiro stumbled backward, his face turning pale as a sheet. Alejandro froze, his arrogant smile instantly vanishing.

"You... you can speak?" Alejandro stammered, his hand instinctively reaching toward the drawer where he kept his pistol.

"I can speak, Alejandro. And more importantly, I can hear," Mateo growled, his voice carrying out into the open hallway where the villagers were listening. "I heard every word you and Ramiro said on my porch yesterday. I heard how you tried to traffic my wife a second time. And I remember... I remember everything your father did to my ears twenty years ago to steal my family's land!"
