Chapter 14 - The Federal Deposition

Friday morning brought crisp autumn air and blinding sunshine that glinted off the glass towers of downtown Denver.

I sat in a high-backed leather chair inside a secure federal briefing room on the eighth floor of the U.S. District Courthouse. Across a polished mahogany table sat Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah Lin, flanked by two federal investigators and a stenographer whose fingers clicked rhythmically against a shorthand machine.

"Mr. Hargrove, let's turn our attention to the architectural blueprints recovered from the Apex Holdings audit files," Assistant U.S. Attorney Lin said, sliding a series of large-format documents across the table. "Specifically, the River North municipal development project awarded to Ridgeline Design eighteen months ago."

I leaned forward, adjusting my glasses as I examined the schematics. Even upside down, I recognized the zoning lines and elevation markers.

"I remember this project," I said steadily. "I was the lead design architect for the structural framing."

"Are you aware that the structural load calculations submitted to the city zoning commission were altered after you signed off on them?" Lin asked, her gaze fixed sharply on my face. "Altered to allow for substandard concrete reinforcement, saving Ridgeline roughly four point two million dollars in material costs—funds that were subsequently funneled through shell companies managed by Arthur Vance."

My stomach tightened into a hard, cold knot. "Altered? By whom?"

Lin slid a final piece of paper across the table—an internal server access log bearing a digital timestamp and a secure employee login signature.

My breath caught in my throat.

The login signature belonged to David Hayes. But the secondary authorization code—the master override required to modify certified architectural blueprints—belonged to my own supervisor, senior partner Marcus Vance... no, wait, the system logs showed the override was executed using a master administrative key that only three people in the entire firm possessed: Arthur Vance, David Hayes, and the head of internal compliance.

"Claire discovered those discrepancies during her audit," Lin said quietly. "She matched the altered load limits against public safety codes and realized that the mixed-use tower downtown was structurally vulnerable. When she threatened to take her findings directly to the state safety board, they tried to eliminate her."

"They didn't just try to silence a whistleblower," I said, my voice dropping into a dangerous, cold register as the full horror of what my firm had been doing settled over me. "They were willing to let thousands of people live and work inside a ticking time bomb just to pad their profit margins."

"That's why this case is moving to federal grand jury indictments by Monday morning," Lin said, closing her leather binder with a sharp snap. "And Mr. Hargrove, your testimony as the lead architect whose designs were weaponized without your consent is going to be the linchpin that puts Arthur Vance away for the rest of his life."
