Chapter 7 - The Inner Circle

I sat in my idling car outside the apartment complex, the rain drumming a deafening rhythm against the roof, staring at the flash drive in my hand.
Ridgeline. My employer.
The firm where I spent sixty hours a week designing sustainable housing and mixed-use towers. The firm owned by Arthur Vance—no relation to the caseworker, a towering, ruthless businessman who treated concrete and steel like weapons of influence.
Arthur Vance had built half of downtown Denver. And according to the documents spread across my passenger seat, he had also laundered millions in illicit zoning kickbacks through dummy shell companies—funds that Claire had traced down to the last penny during her audit at Apex Holdings.
My phone rang, shattering the heavy silence inside the car.
It was Dana from Lakeview General.
"Mr. Hargrove? You need to get back to the hospital immediately."
My stomach plummeted. "Is it Claire? Did she...?"
"No, her vitals are stable, but we have a major security situation," Dana said, her voice trembling. "Ten minutes ago, two men claiming to be federal agents showed up at the ICU demanding to transfer her to a private facility downtown. When security asked for their credentials, they pulled weapons and tried to force their way into Room 412."
"Where are they now?" I shouted, slamming the car into drive.
"Hospital security locked down the floor, and local police are en route, but the men managed to slip down the stairwell before units arrived. Mr. Hargrove... they know she’s under police protection, and they know you’re her emergency contact. You and Maya are not safe here."

"I'm on my way," I said, hitting the gas as the car fishtailed slightly on the wet asphalt.
They weren't just trying to silence a whistleblower; they were hunting down anyone connected to the audit. And that meant Maya and I were now sitting squarely in the crosshairs of a multi-million-dollar criminal conspiracy.
