Chapter 5 - The Incident Report

The sun hadn’t yet broken through the heavy grey blanket of Friday morning clouds when I dialed Detective Miller’s number. I stood by the large floor-to-ceiling windows of my apartment, watching the distant headlights of commuters crawling along Interstate 25 through the relentless drizzle.
"Hargrove," I said when the line connected. "You called about Claire Donovan."
"Mr. Hargrove, thanks for getting back to me," Miller’s voice was crisp, professional, devoid of warmth. "We’ve been processing the scene of the collision on West Colfax. Initially, patrol units logged it as a standard wet-weather spin-out. But our accident reconstruction team took a closer look at her vehicle this morning."
My fingers tightened around the phone. "What did they find?"
"Brake line tampering," Miller said bluntly. "Someone cleanly severed the primary hydraulic line just behind the front driver's side wheel. It wasn't a wear-and-tear failure. It was deliberate. Someone wanted her off the road."
The room seemed to tilt slightly. Deliberate.
Claire wasn't just the victim of a tragic twist of fate on a rainy Thursday night. Someone had targeted her. Someone had tried to kill her.
"Why?" I demanded, my voice rising. "She was just a mother, an ordinary person—"
"Mr. Hargrove, are you aware of what Ms. Donovan did for a living?" Miller interrupted.
"She... I thought she worked in administration. Office work."
"Not according to the files we found in her trunk," Miller said, his tone turning grave. "For the past three years, Claire Donovan worked as a senior financial compliance auditor for Apex Holdings. And six months ago, she blew the whistle on a multi-million-dollar embezzlement and zoning fraud scheme involving some very high-profile real estate developers right here in Denver."
My blood ran cold. Real estate developers. The same industry I worked in every single day.

"Apex Holdings," I whispered, the name sending a shockwave through my brain. Ridgeline, my firm, had submitted joint bids with Apex on municipal projects three times in the last two years.
"She was scheduled to testify before a federal grand jury next Tuesday," Miller added quietly. "And now she’s in a coma, and the documents she was planning to submit as primary evidence are missing from her car."
