Chapter 20 - The Blueprint of Forever

That evening, the sun dipped below the jagged peaks of the Rocky Mountains, painting the Denver sky in brilliant shades of violet, amber, and deep crimson.

Back at the apartment—which was no longer quite as minimalist or spotless as it used to be, now featuring scattered colored pencils, half-read novels, and a small potted fern on the kitchen counter—Maya had finally fallen asleep on the living room sofa, exhausted from a full day of groundbreaking ceremonies and celebratory cake.

Claire and I stood out on the wide balcony, wrapped in light wool sweaters, looking out over the glittering grid of city lights stretching endlessly toward the horizon.

"You know," Claire said softly, resting her chin lightly against my shoulder as my arms circled her waist from behind, "when I kept that drawing all those years, locked away in the bottom lining of my old portfolio, I used to wonder if you ever thought about how we left things."

"Every single day," I confessed quietly, pressing a gentle kiss to the top of her dark curls. "I just didn't know how to admit it to myself until the phone rang that night."

She turned around within the circle of my arms, looking up into my eyes with a gaze that had anchored me through the darkest storm of my life. She lifted her right hand, twisting the silver ring around her index finger—a nervous habit she would probably never lose, and one I would never want her to change.

"We have a lot of blueprints to draw, Owen," she whispered with a quiet, confident smile.

"We have a lifetime," I answered, pulling her closer as the city lights hummed around us, illuminating the foundation of a future we were finally building together.
