Every seat inside the National Military Honors Hall was filled.
Decorated generals, politicians, decorated veterans, and hundreds of officers gathered beneath glittering chandeliers to celebrate the country's bravest heroes.
At the center of the ceremony stood Lieutenant Emma Carter, only twenty-eight years old—the youngest officer ever nominated for the nation's highest military honor.
But not everyone believed she deserved to be there.
General Richard Hayes, a legendary four-star commander feared across the armed forces, stared at Emma with visible disappointment.
When her name was announced, he slowly stepped toward the podium.
His voice echoed through the silent hall.
"Lieutenant Carter... medals are earned through sacrifice, not sympathy."
