CHAPTER 5 — The Hero Everyone Buried Was Still Alive
The hall was silent.
No applause.
No whispers.
Only the sound of Captain Daniel Carter's wheelchair rolling across the marble floor.
For twenty-five years, America had mourned him as a fallen hero.
Now...
He was alive.
General Hayes stared at him in horror.
"You... you were dead."
Daniel smiled weakly.
"That's exactly what you wanted everyone to believe."
Military police tightened their grip on Hayes as journalists rushed toward the stage.
Flash after flash illuminated Daniel's scarred face.
Emma knelt beside her father, tears finally filling her eyes.
"Dad... why didn't you come home?"
Daniel reached into the worn military blanket covering his legs.
He pulled out a rusted metal case.
The same case he had protected with his life.
"Because they were still hunting everyone who knew the truth."
He placed it into Emma's hands.
"Inside are the original mission files... names, bank transfers, secret orders... everything Hayes buried."
The Defense Secretary carefully opened the case.
Inside were hundreds of classified documents.
Photos.
Maps.
Signed authorization papers.
Even recordings.
Every piece pointed to one terrifying conclusion.
Operation Black Ridge had never been a failed rescue.
It had been a carefully planned betrayal.
But the greatest shock was still waiting.
At the bottom of the case lay a thick envelope marked:
"DO NOT OPEN UNTIL HAYES IS EXPOSED."
The Secretary broke the seal.
His face instantly turned white.
He slowly looked at Hayes.
"You're not the only one involved..."
The audience froze.
