Chapter 1 - THE TASTE OF ASHES

The Ghost in the BallroomThe Waldorf’s Grand Ballroom was a gilded cage of old money, high-stakes politics, and laundered sins. Crystal chandeliers hung like frozen explosions from the vaulted ceilings, casting a brilliant, unforgiving light over three hundred of the city’s most dangerous elites.
Chastity Morales stood at the edge of the mezzanine, her fingers lightly tracing the cold marble balustrade. Beneath her, the emerald silk of her dress rippled with every breath, catching the light like a dangerous, living thing. She looked every bit the queen of a domain she had spent three years managing from the shadows.
"You look spectacular, Chastity."
The voice was smooth, cultured, and carried the faint, distinctive accent of a man who had never had to raise his voice to get what he wanted.
Chastity didn't flinch. She turned slowly, her stiletto heels clicking sharply against the marble.
Standing before her was Julian Vance. The youngest district attorney in the city’s history, a man whose political campaign had been quietly funded—in part—by Gabriel Mercer’s shell corporations. Julian was handsome in a conventional, Ivy-League way, but Chastity knew the rot that hid beneath the tailored tuxedo.
"Mr. Vance," Chastity said, her voice a cool, professional purr. She offered him a polite, hollow smile. "I didn't realize the District Attorney's office took such a keen interest in pediatric oncology galas."
"We take an interest in anything that brings out the most influential minds in the city," Julian replied, stepping closer, his eyes tracking the plunging neckline of her dress with an intensity that made her skin crawl. He offered her a flute of champagne. "And tonight, you are undeniably the most captivating mind in this room. Or should I say... the most dangerous?"
Chastity took the glass, her dark eyes locking onto his. "I'm just a secretary, Julian."
"A secretary who holds the keys to the kingdom," Julian murmured, lowering his voice as a pair of elderly socialites glided past. "Gabriel Mercer thinks he owns this city, Chastity. But a man like that... a man built for the trenches... he doesn't understand that the world is changing. The law isn't a wall he can just bulldoze anymore. It’s a net. And it's closing around him."
Chastity took a slow, deliberate sip of the champagne. "If you brought me here to fish for state's evidence, Mr. Vance, you’re wasting your breath. I manage spreadsheets, not street wars."
"Come now," Julian smiled, but it didn't reach his eyes. He reached out, his fingers brushing against the bare skin of her forearm. The touch was calculated, a display of ownership meant for the cameras flashing across the room. "We both know you're the one who keeps him out of a orange jumpsuit. But what happens when the savior gets tired of being ignored? A woman like you shouldn't be hiding in a dark office on the thirty-second floor. You belong in the light. With someone who can actually appreciate the view."
Before Chastity could pull her arm away, a sudden, violent shift in the room's atmosphere caught her attention.
The low hum of polite conversation dipped. Heads began to turn toward the grand arched entrance of the ballroom.
Chastity’s breath hitched.
Gabriel Mercer had arrived.
He hadn't changed into a tuxedo. He still wore the charcoal trousers, but he had thrown a heavy, black cashmere overcoat over his white shirt. His tie was gone, the top three buttons of his shirt undone to reveal the stark column of his throat. He looked rough, monolithic, and entirely out of place among the pristine tuxedos—like a wolf that had broken through the glass of a greenhouse.
Beside her, Julian stiffened. "What the hell is he doing here? He wasn't on the guest list."
Gabriel didn't look at the politicians who hurriedly cleared a path for him. He didn't look at the security guards who suddenly looked very intensely at the floor, pretending they hadn't seen him enter. His storm-gray eyes swept the massive room with predatory efficiency until they locked onto the mezzanine.
Onto Chastity.
And onto Julian Vance’s hand, which was still resting on her arm.
Chastity felt the air leave her lungs. Gabriel began to move toward the grand staircase, his heavy strides projecting an aura of absolute, terrifying purpose.
"Julian," Chastity said quietly, her voice tight. "I suggest you take your hand off me. Right now."
"Why?" Julian scoffed, though a bead of sweat had formed near his hairline. "He won't do anything here. Not in front of the press. Not in front of half the federal judges in the state."
"You don't understand," Chastity whispered, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. "You think he's a businessman. You've never seen what he looks like when he decides to burn a house down."
Gabriel reached the top of the stairs. The distance between them shrank to nothing. Up close, the scent of the freezing winter air, tobacco, and expensive cedar rolled off him, obliterating the sickly sweet scent of Julian's cologne.
Gabriel stopped two feet away. He didn't look at Julian. His gaze dragged down the length of Chastity’s emerald dress, his jaw clenching so hard a pulse throbbed in his cheek.
"Chastity," Gabriel said. His voice was a low, gravelly vibration that vibrated right through the soles of her feet. "Your phone went to voicemail."
"I was busy, Mr. Mercer," she replied, her voice remarkably steady despite the chaos in her veins. "As I told you, I am off the clock."
Finally, Gabriel’s gray eyes shifted to Julian. The temperature in the mezzanine seemed to drop ten degrees.
"Vance," Gabriel said flatly.
"Mercer," Julian countered, puffing out his chest, attempting to use his stature as a public official as armor. "This is a private charity event. I believe you're trespassing."
Gabriel took a single step forward, crowding Julian’s space. He was half a foot taller and twice as broad as the district attorney. "I own the foundation that hosts this charity, counselor. I bought it three years ago. So technically, you’re eating my shrimp, drinking my champagne, and standing in my way."
Gabriel’s eyes dropped to Julian's hand, which had finally retreated from Chastity’s arm.
"I have a very low tolerance for people touching things that belong to my office," Gabriel whispered, the threat so raw and unvarnished that Julian visibly paled. "Go find a camera to smile for, Julian. Before I decide to make you a permanent part of the architecture."
Julian opened his mouth to speak, looked into Gabriel's dead, gray eyes, and thought better of it. With a tight, humiliated nod, he turned and walked briskly down the stairs, disappearing into the crowd.
Chastity let out a sharp breath. "That was incredibly reckless. He’s the district attorney, Gabriel. He's looking for any excuse to put a wiretap on the thirty-second floor."
Gabriel didn't answer. He closed the remaining distance between them, trapping her against the marble balustrade. The heat radiating from his chest was suffocating.
"Is that who you dressed up for?" Gabriel demanded, his voice thick with a dark, volatile possessiveness she had never heard from him before. "A suit with a badge? A man who wouldn't last five minutes in the dark with me?"
"I dressed up for myself," Chastity snapped, her anger finally flaring through her professional mask. She looked up at him, her crimson lips parting. "For three years, I have been a shadow in your office. I have washed your blood off the floorboards. I have buried the names of men who crossed you. I wanted to remember what it felt like to be a woman, Gabriel. Not a ghost."
Gabriel’s gaze dropped to her lips, his breath hitching. His hand came up, his thumb brushing against her jawline. The calloused skin was rough against her face, but his touch was shockingly gentle—almost reverent.
"You were never a ghost, Chastity," he growled softly. "You were the only thing in that building that was real."
Suddenly, the lights in the Grand Ballroom flickered.
Once. Twice.
Then, the entire hotel was plunged into pitch-black darkness.
May you like
A collective gasp echoed through the crowd below, followed quickly by the sharp, unmistakable pop-pop-pop of a silenced firearm from the ground floor.
Before Chastity could react, Gabriel’s heavy arm wrapped around her waist, lifting her off her feet as he shoved her behind a massive stone pillar, shielding her body entirely with his own.
