Chapter 6 - THE EMERALD EMPIRE

The Queen's GambitThe interrogation room at the 1st Precinct was cold, sterile, and smelled of cheap floor wax.

Chastity sat at the metal table, her hands cuffed to a steel ring in the center. She still wore the oversized gray sweatshirt, her bare legs cold beneath the table.

The heavy door clicked open, and Julian Vance stepped inside. He had removed his tuxedo jacket, his shirt sleeves rolled up, looking like a man who was ready to do the dirty work of justice. He carried a thick manila folder, which he dropped onto the table with a heavy thud.

"You look a lot less intimidating without the emerald silk, Chastity," Julian said, pulling out a chair and sitting across from her. He offered her a cruel, triumphant smile. "Where's your boss? Where's Mercer?"

"I don't know," Chastity said smoothly, her voice completely devoid of fear. "I am a corporate secretary, Mr. Vance. When the shooting started, I ran. I haven't seen Mr. Mercer since."

"Don't play dumb with me!" Julian snapped, slamming his hand against the table. "We found the blood in the kitchen. We found the hitmen. One of them is currently in the ICU with a .22 caliber slug in his throat. The gun was registered to a shell company owned by your late father."

He leaned forward, his eyes gleaming with malicious intent. "You’re going away for a long time, Chastity. Unless... you give me the ledger."

Chastity tilted her head, a slow, amused smile spreading across her lips. "The ledger? I don't know what you're talking about."

"The master drive!" Julian hissed. "The one containing the offshore accounts. The bribes. I know you have it. You give me that drive, and I’ll reduce your charges to simple obstruction. You'll serve two years in a minimum-security facility. You refuse... and I'll make sure you get life without parole."

Chastity leaned back as far as her cuffs would allow. "You really are an amateur, Julian. You think you've caught me in a net. But you forgot to check who built the net."

Julian frowned. "What are you talking about?"

"The Waldorf gala," Chastity said, her voice dropping into a dangerous, melodic rhythm. "The foundation that hosted it is a charity. But the bank account that processed the ticket sales... that account belongs to a shell company called 'Vance & Associates.' A real-estate trust registered in the Cayman Islands under your mother's maiden name."

Julian’s face drained of color. "How... how do you know that?"

"I'm Gabriel Mercer’s accountant," Chastity whispered, her eyes flashing with a terrifying brilliance. "Did you really think Gabriel funded your campaign out of the goodness of his heart? Every dollar he gave you was routed through that charity account. Every time you accepted a donation, you were legally signing off on laundered syndicate cash. I set up the accounts myself two years ago."

The door to the interrogation room suddenly burst open.

A senior detective stood in the doorway, his face pale. "Mr. Vance... you need to see this. Right now."

"Not now!" Julian yelled, not taking his eyes off Chastity.

"Sir, it's the state attorney general," the detective swallowed hard. "And... and Gabriel Mercer."

Julian froze. He stood up so quickly his chair rattled against the floorboards. He marched out of the room, leaving the door ajar.

Chastity didn't move. She listened to the chaos erupting in the hallway outside.

Through the open door, she saw them approach.

Gabriel Mercer walked down the corridor of the police station as if he owned the building. He wore a brand-new, tailored black suit, his injured shoulder hidden beneath the perfect cut of the fabric. Beside him walked the State Attorney General, along with three federal agents.

Julian rushed to intercept them. "Sir! What is the meaning of this? We have the Mercer syndicate's primary asset in custody!"

The Attorney General looked at Julian with disgust. "Mr. Vance, you are stripped of your authority effective immediately. Federal agents have just executed a search warrant on your private residence. They found three million dollars in untraceable bearer bonds linked to a Cayman Islands account."

"That's a lie!" Julian screamed, pointing a trembling finger at Gabriel. "He framed me! He’s the monster!"

"The evidence was delivered to my office an hour ago via an encrypted digital drop," the Attorney General said coldly. "Along with a full confession from the Leone syndicate detailing how you leaked Gabriel Mercer's location tonight in exchange for a fifteen percent cut of their shipping routes."

Julian fell silent, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. The federal agents stepped forward, clicked handcuffs around his wrists, and dragged him down the hallway—the very hallway he had walked down as a king just minutes before.

Gabriel didn't look at Julian as he was dragged away.

He walked into the interrogation room.

The detective tried to stop him, but Gabriel flatly said, "Leave us." The detective quickly backed away and shut the door.

Gabriel stood before Chastity. He reached into his pocket, pulled out a small key, and unlocked her handcuffs. The metal clattered against the table.

Chastity stood up, rubbing her wrists. She looked up at him, a faint, proud smile on her lips. "You found the ledger."

"I found it," Gabriel said, his voice thick with an emotion he couldn't entirely contain. He reached out, his large hand cupping her cheek, his thumb gently wiping away the last trace of dried blood. "But I didn't use it to save the company, Chastity. I used it to destroy the only man who dared to put his hands on you."

He looked down at her, his gray eyes burning with a dark, absolute devotion. "The city is ours now, Chastity. No more shadows. No more hiding behind a desk."

Chastity smiled, her hand coming up to rest over his. "And what am I to you now, Mr. Mercer?"

Gabriel leaned down, his lips brushing against hers, his voice a fierce promise against her mouth.
