Chapter 5 - THE NET CLOSES

The Lion and the LambThe news broadcast played on a small, grainy television in the corner of the safehouse.

“...Chastity Morales, a senior administrative assistant at Mercer Holdings, is currently at large and considered armed and dangerous,” the anchor’s voice droned over a photograph of Chastity taken from her corporate profile—looking professional, severe, and entirely innocent. “District Attorney Julian Vance stated that Morales is believed to be the primary financial architect behind the Mercer syndicate...”

Gabriel slammed a glass of whiskey onto the side table, shattering the crystal. "Vance is a dead man. I’ll clip him myself before the sun comes up."

"No," Chastity said calmly, though her face was pale. She was pacing the floor, her mind spinning through corporate tax codes, legal loopholes, and syndicate history. "That's exactly what he wants, Gabriel. If you kill the District Attorney right after he issues a warrant for my arrest, it confirms everything he’s saying. The federal government will step in. They’ll trigger a RICO indictment, and Mercer Holdings will be seized within forty-eight hours."

"I don't care about the company, Chastity!" Gabriel roared, standing up from the sofa, ignoring the pain ripping through his bandaged shoulder. He stormed across the room, grabbing her shoulders, his fingers digging into her skin. "They are trying to put you in a cage. Do you understand what they do to women like you in state facilities? You won't survive a week."

"I won't be going to a state facility," she said, looking up at him with absolute certainty. "Because Julian Vance isn't doing this to uphold the law. He's doing this because you humiliated him in front of his peers at the gala. And because he wants what I have."

Gabriel’s eyes narrowed. "What do you have?"

"The ledger," Chastity said softly.

Gabriel stiffened. The ledger was a myth within the syndicate—a master encrypted drive containing the real names, offshore account numbers, and recorded bribes of every politician, judge, and police chief on the Mercer payroll. Gabriel had never asked her to create it, but he knew she kept one.

"Where is it?" Gabriel asked.

"It's inside the vault at the thirty-second floor of the Mercer building," Chastity said. "Julian knows he can't get a warrant to search your private office without a judge he doesn't own. But if he arrests me, he can claim the office is a active crime scene. He’ll walk right past your security, take the drive, and use it to become the governor of this state."

Gabriel let out a low, dangerous growl. "He thinks he's going to step into my house and take my blood?"

"He's already there," Mick called out from the window, his voice tight. "Boss, look outside."

Gabriel and Chastity rushed to the window, pulling back the heavy blinds.

The street outside the safehouse was quiet, but at both ends of the block, dark sedans were idling, their headlights turned off.

"They tracked your phone, Chastity," Gabriel hissed, realizing too late.

"No," Chastity whispered, looking down at her encrypted device. "The phone is clean. They tracked the emerald dress. The silk... the designer boutique where I bought it. Julian Vance paid for that boutique’s inventory system last year during his campaign. He knew exactly what dress I bought, and he had a GPS tag embedded in the lining of the garment bag."

She looked back at the discarded green dress in the corner. Inside the heavy silk lining, a tiny, red light was pulsing slowly.

"We're surrounded," Mick said, chambering a round in his submachine gun. "We can fight our way out, boss, but with your shoulder..."

"We don't fight," Chastity said, a sudden, brilliant, and terrifying plan forming in her mind. She looked at Gabriel, her eyes burning with a ferocious light. "Gabriel, do you trust me?"

Gabriel stared at her, his storm-gray eyes softening into something absolute. "With my life, Chastity. You know that."

"Then let them take me," she said.

Gabriel’s expression turned instantly to fury. "The hell I will!"

"Listen to me!" she yelled, grabbing his face with both hands, forcing him to look at her. "If they arrest me here, the crime scene is this safehouse. Julian Vance won't have legal jurisdiction to touch the thirty-second floor. You have two hours while they process me at the central precinct to go to the office, get the ledger, and use it to destroy him. If you try to save me now, we both die in this room."

Gabriel’s jaw worked, his chest heaving as he fought against every instinct he possessed—every instinct that told him to protect her, to kill the world before it touched her.

"If he hurts you, Chastity..." Gabriel whispered, his voice cracking with an agonizing desperation.

"He won't," she said, her lips suddenly finding his.

The kiss was desperate, violent, and tasted of salt and copper. It was the first time they had ever touched like this—a sudden, explosive release of three years of unspoken hunger. Gabriel wrapped his uninjured arm around her waist, crushing her against his chest as if he could hide her inside his own skin.

When she pulled away, she was breathless, her crimson lipstick smeared.

"Go out the back, Gabriel," she whispered. "I’ll buy you the time."
