Chapter 4 - THE PRICE OF THE THRONE

A Gathering of ShadowsThe safehouse was a nondescript brownstone in the old industrial district, hidden behind a facade of a failing textile business. Inside, the air smelled of antiseptic and ozone.

Gabriel lay on a leather sofa, his bare torso wrapped tight in pristine white bandages. The bullet had passed clean through his shoulder, missing the bone by a fraction of an inch, but the blood loss had been severe. His face was a mask of exhaustion, his skin pale against the dark stubble on his jaw.

Yet, his eyes never left Chastity.

She sat in a chair across from him, wearing an oversized gray sweatshirt Mick had found in the back of the SUV, her emerald dress ruined and discarded in a corner. She was cleaning the dried blood from her hands with an alcohol wipe.

The silence between them was heavy, weighted with the unspoken revelations of the night.

"Where did you learn to shoot like that?" Gabriel asked, his voice a low gravelly rasp.

Chastity didn't look up from her hands. "My father was a night watchman at the old docks before you took them over, Gabriel. He taught me that a woman alone in this city needs a equalizer. I never told you because... well, a secretary who knows how to shoot tends to make her boss nervous."

"Nothing about you makes me nervous, Chastity," Gabriel said quietly. "It makes me furious. But not nervous."

"Why furious?" She finally looked at him, her dark eyes defiant.

"Because you went back into that fire," Gabriel growled, trying to sit up, but a sharp wince tore through his features, forcing him back against the cushions. "You were safe. You were out of the net. You could have walked away tonight, and no one would have blamed you. You could have been free of me."

"I don't want to be free of you," Chastity said before she could stop herself.

The words hung in the air, sudden and heavy.

Gabriel froze, his gray eyes locking onto hers with a sudden, burning intensity. "Say that again."

Chastity stood up, tossing the alcohol wipe into the trash. She walked over to the sofa, standing over him, her arms crossed defensively over her chest. "For three years, I’ve built your empire from a laptop. I know every dollar you make, every man you pay, every secret you keep. You think I did all that just for a salary, Gabriel? You think I risked my life tonight for an employer?"

Gabriel reached out with his uninjured arm, his large hand wrapping around her wrist. He didn't pull her down, but the grip was unbreakable. "Why, Chastity? Tell me."

"Because you're the only man in this city who doesn't look at me like I’m a prize to be won or a piece of furniture," she whispered, her voice trembling with the raw emotion she had suppressed for years. "You look at me like I’m an equal. Even when you’re pretending I’m invisible. I stayed because I wanted to see how far we could go before the world tried to stop us."

Gabriel pulled her down slowly, until she was forced to lean over him, her face inches from his.

"The world isn't going to stop us," Gabriel whispered, his breath warm against her face. "Because tomorrow, I’m going to kill every single person who had a hand in tonight."

Before Chastity could answer, the door to the safehouse burst open.

Mick stepped inside, his expression grim. "Boss, we have a problem. The police didn't raid the Waldorf after the shooting."

Gabriel frowned, his gaze shifting from Chastity to his lieutenant. "What do you mean? A hundred politicians were in that room. The feds should be crawling all over the city."

"Julian Vance killed the response," Mick said, looking at Chastity with a worried glance. "He used his authority to classify the shooting as a 'private security dispute' between rival corporations. He seized the hotel’s security footage before we could wipe it."

May you like

Chastity felt a cold dread settle in her stomach. "He has the footage of me shooting that hitman."

"It's worse than that, Miss Morales," Mick swallowed hard. "Julian Vance just issued an emergency arrest warrant. Not for Gabriel. For you. He’s charging you with first-degree attempted murder and syndicate conspiracy. He's using you to tear Gabriel down."
