CHAPTER 2 — The Mountain Started Falling

The first boulder crashed down with a sound like thunder.
BOOM!
The ground beneath Mark's boots shook violently.
Passengers inside the train screamed as the entire train trembled.
From the windows, dozens of phones recorded the terrifying scene unfolding above.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
The eagle shot into the sky.
Instead of escaping, it circled directly over the unstable cliff, crying again and again.
Mark sprinted toward the locomotive.
"Everybody stay inside!"
His voice echoed through the mountain pass.
A few curious passengers had already stepped onto the tracks.
"Back inside!"
"NOW!"
One mother grabbed her little daughter and ran.
Another man refused.
"It's just a few rocks."
Before Mark could answer...
CRAAAAASH!
A boulder the size of a pickup truck smashed onto the rails less than fifty meters ahead.
Steel twisted instantly.
Concrete ties exploded into pieces.
Everyone froze.
The arrogant passenger collapsed onto his knees.
"Oh God..."
Then came the real nightmare.
The entire cliff began collapsing.
Thousands...
No—
Millions of rocks thundered downward like an avalanche.
Trees snapped in half.
Clouds of dust swallowed everything.
The deafening roar lasted nearly forty seconds.
When the dust finally settled...
The railway no longer existed.
More than two hundred meters of track had vanished beneath mountains of rock.
Silence returned.
Then crying.
People hugged complete strangers.
Children sobbed into their parents' jackets.
Several passengers realized something horrifying.
If the train had continued at full speed...
It would have reached this exact spot in less than two minutes.
Every carriage would have plunged into the collapsing canyon below.
Nearly four hundred lives...
Gone.
Mark looked toward the eagle.
The magnificent bird landed quietly on a nearby pine tree.
Its breathing slowed.
For the first time since the attack...
It seemed calm.
Almost relieved.
Then an elderly wildlife photographer stepped forward.
His face had turned completely white.
"I've seen this eagle before."
Everyone looked at him.
"It nests on that cliff every spring."
Mark frowned.
"But why attack the train?"
The old man slowly raised his camera.
"I think..."
His voice cracked.
"I think its chicks were trapped when the mountain began shifting."
"The eagle heard the rocks moving long before any human could."
"It wasn't trying to destroy your train."
"It was trying..."
"...to stop you from driving into your own deaths."
No one spoke.
Several passengers burst into tears.
Mark stared at the bird with overwhelming gratitude.
He whispered,
"You weren't attacking us..."
"You were saving us."
The eagle gave one final cry.
Then spread its enormous wings.
It flew toward the broken mountain...
Disappearing into the thick clouds of dust where its nest had once stood.
The passengers believed the miracle was over.
They were wrong.
Because hidden beneath the collapsed cliff...
Rescue crews would soon uncover something no one had expected—
May you like
A sealed military tunnel buried for more than seventy years...
And inside it was a discovery so shocking that it would make international headlines, forever changing the meaning of the eagle's impossible sacrifice.
