CHAPTER 9 — The Night the Guardian Disappeared

Winter returned to the Rockies with unusual force.
For three straight days, snow buried the mountains beneath thick white blankets. Fierce winds howled through the valleys, and visibility dropped to almost nothing.
Even experienced train crews admitted they had never seen weather this dangerous.
Most trains were canceled.
Only emergency supply trains continued to run.
Mark volunteered for every shift.
"If people are depending on us," he said, "I'll be there."
Samuel watched him prepare to leave.
Before Mark climbed aboard the locomotive, the old man quietly spoke.
"If you don't see her today..."
"Be careful."
Mark understood immediately.
The eagle.
Every storm, every sunrise, every dangerous curve—she had always appeared.
But that morning...
The sky was empty.
For the first time in years, there wasn't a single shadow circling above the cliffs.
An uneasy feeling settled in Mark's chest.
The train pushed slowly through the blizzard.
Snow blasted against the windshield like waves crashing against a ship.
The mountains disappeared behind walls of white.
Inside the passenger cars, people remained calm, trusting the experienced crew.
Then...
Emily, now nine years old and traveling with her family again, looked out the window.
"Mom..."
Her voice trembled.
"I don't think she's coming today."
Her mother gently squeezed her hand.
"Maybe she's keeping warm."
Emily slowly shook her head.
"No..."
"Something's wrong."
Miles ahead, hidden beneath fresh snow, a herd of elk suddenly burst onto the tracks, fleeing in panic.
Mark immediately applied the brakes.
The train stopped just in time.
But the elk weren't afraid of the train.
They were running from something else.
Seconds later...
A deafening crack echoed across the valley.
Not thunder.
Ice.
A massive wall of snow broke free high above the mountains.
An avalanche.
Millions of tons of snow thundered toward the railway.
Passengers screamed.
Mark knew there wasn't enough time.
The avalanche was too close.
Then, out of the blinding snow...
A familiar cry pierced the storm.
The giant eagle.
She dove directly into the rushing cloud of snow, flying lower than Mark had ever seen.
Again and again, she circled one section of the mountainside.
Samuel, watching through binoculars from the research station, suddenly shouted,
"No..."
He understood.
The avalanche wasn't falling naturally.
The unstable snow had split into two separate paths.
One would bury the railway.
The other would miss it completely.
The eagle wasn't trying to stop the avalanche.
She was trying to change its direction.
She repeatedly struck loose snow hanging from a rocky ledge.
One final impact...
CRACK!
A smaller avalanche broke loose first.
It slammed into the larger wall of snow, forcing it sideways.
The roaring mass split apart.
Instead of crashing onto the railway...
Most of it swept harmlessly into the empty valley below.
The ground shook violently.
Snow covered everything.
When silence finally returned...
The railway still stood.
Passengers cried with relief.
Mark searched the sky.
"Eagle!"
No answer.
Only drifting snow.
She was gone.
Rescue teams searched for two days.
Then three.
They found broken feathers scattered across the mountainside.
May you like
But the guardian herself...
Had vanished without a trace.
