Chapter 4 - The Ghost of the Hale Mansion

The arrest of Clive Westbrook and Preston Hale moved with the chilling efficiency of a military operation. Within ten minutes, the millionaire’s glittering ballroom had transformed into a crime scene. The string quartet had packed their violins and fled out the side exit. The forty-seven guests stood frozen against the walls, terrified that speaking or breathing too loudly might implicate them in Clive’s shady empire.
General Vance walked over to where Preston’s leather folder lay scattered on the floor. He bent down with stiff, deliberate movements, picked up a single sheet of paper—the forced guardianship declaration—and tore it neatly down the middle.
He let the pieces flutter onto the marble.
"You're free, Colonel," Vance said quietly, looking up at me. "The Secretary of Defense is waiting outside in a secure vehicle. He wants to brief you on your new assignment at the Pentagon."
My chest tightened, but not from fear. It was the strange, disorienting sensation of a heavy armor plate being unbuckled after twenty years in the trenches.
"Thank you, General," I said, my voice steady. "Though you didn't have to fly in personally."
"You dragged me out of a burning Stryker in 2011, Evelyn," Vance replied, a rare, grim smile touching the corners of his mouth. "Flying commercial to Virginia is the least I could do."
We turned toward the exit, ignoring the frantic, tearful pleas of my mother, who was now screaming curses at the guards as they escorted Clive out. Marjorie lunged forward, her midnight-blue gown catching on a brass planter, sending her sprawling onto her knees.
"Evelyn! You ungrateful bitch! You'll ruin us!" she shrieked, her voice cracking with pure, unadulterated venom. "I gave birth to you! I made you!"
I stopped, turning back slowly. I looked down at the woman on the floor—the woman who had tried to erase my life, burn my future, and lock me away in a gilded cage.
May you like
"No, Mother," I said softly, my voice carrying clearly across the silent ballroom. "You tried to own me. But the United States Army taught me how to survive."
I turned my back on her for the final time and walked out into the cool night air.
