Chapter 8 - The Final Mission Briefing

Two months later, the fallout from the Westbrook-Hale conspiracy had reshaped the defense contracting landscape. Over a dozen corrupt executives and complicit officials were indicted in federal court. Clive Westbrook was sentenced to twenty-five years in federal prison with no possibility of parole, and Preston Hale accepted a ten-year plea deal for his role in doctoring military records.

Marjorie Hale had disappeared from public life entirely, reportedly renting a small, rundown apartment in a forgotten suburb of Baltimore, living off a meager government stipend while her former high-society friends pretended she never existed.

Inside my secure office at the Pentagon, the satellite feed flickered green, tracking a high-priority transport cargo crossing the Atlantic.

General Vance walked in, tossing a manila envelope onto my desk. It wasn't a dossier this time. It was a promotion order.

"The Senate Armed Services Committee just voted unanimously," Vance said, leaning against the edge of my desk with a proud, approving grin. "Congratulations, Brigadier General Hale."

They had tried to turn me into a delusion. They had tried to paint my service as a sickness.

Instead, they had merely cleared the path for me to rise to the highest levels of the institution I had bled for.

"Thank you, General," I said, looking up with a steady, unbreakable gaze. "When does the new team deploy?"

"Tomorrow morning," Vance replied, tapping the desk. "And this time, Colonel—sorry, General—you're running the whole show."
