Chapter 5 - The Pentagon’s Shadow

Three days later, the Sterling Hotel gala was a distant memory, replaced by front-page headlines across every major news network: Millionaire Clive Westbrook Arrested in Massive Military Bribery Scandal; Socialite Marjorie Hale Faces Investigation.
I sat at a heavy mahogany desk in the Pentagon, staring at a satellite map of Eastern Europe displayed on a wall-mounted monitor. The room was quiet, save for the hum of secure servers and the distant clatter of boots in the corridor.
General Vance entered without knocking, tossing a thick dossier onto my desk.
"Word travels fast in D.C.," Vance said, pulling up a chair. "The board of Westbrook Industries has imploded. Clive’s assets have been frozen pending federal forfeiture. Your mother is currently trying to liquidate her jewelry to pay her defense lawyers, but federal judges have slapped injunctions on all her accounts."
I opened the dossier. Inside were transfer records detailing how Marjorie and Preston had systematically drained my late father’s trust fund over the past fifteen years, claiming I was "incompetent" and legally dead to the estate.
"They thought I’d sign those papers out of exhaustion," I murmured, tracing my finger along the edge of a financial ledger. "They spent two decades convincing themselves I was broken."
"People who only understand power always mistake trauma for weakness," Vance said quietly. He leaned forward. "Which brings us to why you're here, Colonel. The Joint Chiefs need a director for a black-ops logistics and intelligence division. Someone who knows how to operate behind enemy lines when the official channels fail. Someone who cannot be bought, intimidated, or broken."
I looked up from the dossier, meeting the general's unwavering gaze. "What’s the catch?"
"The catch is that you'll be operating in the shadows. No medals, no public recognition, and you'll be stepping on the toes of some very powerful politicians who profited off the old system."

A slow, cold smile spread across my face. It was the same smile I had worn before walking into an ambush in the Korangal Valley—knowing the danger, accepting the odds, and choosing to fight anyway.
"When do I start, General?"
