Chapter 3 - THE DANCE OF SHADOWS

The discovery of Lord Sterling’s body turned the Royal Opera House from a place of art into a crime scene wrapped in terror.

Within thirty minutes, the entire block was cordoned off by police carriages and heavy black steam-coaches. Armed guards stood at every exit. Whistles blew in the foggy night air as Detective Marcus Vance—a hardened, cold-eyed investigator with a personal grudge against the elite of the city—strode into the grand foyer.

"Nobody enters, nobody leaves!" Marcus’s voice boomed across the marble entrance hall. "I want every performer, every stagehand, every musician lined up in the main lobby right now!"

In the center of the hall, the company members huddled together in fear. Among them was Clara. She sat quietly on a wooden bench in the corner, her small hands resting in her lap, looking entirely unbothered by the chaos around her. Her dusty feet were tucked neatly under her ragged dress.

Detective Marcus walked straight toward the VIP lounge where Irina Vance was sitting, wrapped in a heavy fur coat, sipping whiskey with a trembling hand.

"Detective," Irina said, her voice shaking forcedly. "Thank God you're here. A lunatic has broken into the theater. She killed Lord Sterling! She's targeting the company!"

Marcus stopped in front of Irina. He looked at her pale face, then looked down at his official case file.

"Interesting," Marcus said softly, pulling out a cigar but not lighting it. "You seem very eager to blame a murder on a seven-year-old child, Miss Vance."

"It's not just the child!" Irina spat out, her eyes darting around frantically. "She has someone helping her! Someone from Evelyn Claire's past! They are trying to frame me!"

"Frame you for what?" Marcus asked, his sharp eyes narrowing. "For stealing a ballet? Or for what happened seven years ago on the iron bridge?"

Irina’s hand jerked, spilling whiskey onto her silk dress. "What... what are you talking about?"

"Seven years ago, Evelyn Claire went missing," Marcus said, stepping closer. "The official report said she leaped from the bridge due to depression. But the case file was closed in less than twenty-four hours by order of... Lord Sterling." Marcus pointed a thumb toward the upper balcony where the body had been found. "And now, the man who closed that file is dead."

Across the room, Clara watched the interrogation silently.

A shadow fell over the bench where Clara was sitting. It was Maestro Salvatore. He looked down at the child, his eyes filled with a mixture of terror and deep, hidden guilt.

"Who are you?" Salvatore asked in a harsh whisper, bending down so only she could hear. "Who sent you here tonight, little girl? Evelyn died seven years ago. I saw her body pulled... I mean, I saw the police report!"

Clara slowly lifted her head. Her bright blue eyes met Salvatore’s.

"You lie, Maestro," Clara said in a voice far too calm for a child her age. "You didn't see a police report. You were standing on the bridge that night. You held my mother's music box while Irina pushed her into the cold water."

Salvatore felt as if a physical fist had slammed into his chest. He took a staggering step back, clutching his heart. "How... how could you possibly know that? You were just an infant!"

"My mother told me," Clara replied simply. "She tells me every night when the wind blows through the alleyways."

"You're insane," Salvatore breathed, sweat breaking out on his forehead. "You're a demon!"

"No," Clara whispered, leaning forward slightly. "I am just the music box. And tonight, the main key has finally been turned."

Before Salvatore could respond, Detective Marcus’s voice cut through the hall.

"Attention everyone!" Marcus called out, standing in the center of the grand staircase. "We have searched the entire backstage area. We found a hidden passage behind the main stage wardrobe. Inside, we found this."

Marcus held up a heavy, steel-bound journal. The leather cover was water-damaged and warped, but the golden initials on the front were still clearly visible: E.C.

Irina gasped, standing up so fast her chair fell backward. "That's... that's Evelyn's personal diary!"

"Indeed," Marcus said, opening the book. "And inside this diary, Miss Vance, there is an entry written on the very night she disappeared. It details a secret contract signed between you, Lord Sterling, and Maestro Salvatore. A contract to steal her life's work... or make sure she never danced again."

The room went dead silent. The dancers turned to look at Irina with horror and disgust.

"It's a lie! It's a forgery!" Irina screamed, pointing a trembling finger at Clara. "She brought it here! She put it there!"

"Actually," Marcus said coldly, looking down at the final page, "this book wasn't hidden tonight. The dust on it is seven years thick. But there is something new written on the back cover... written in red ink just an hour ago."

Marcus looked directly at Irina, his eyes burning with accusation.

"It says: One down. Two to go."

CHAPTER 3 HOOK: Just as Marcus finished reading, the giant chandelier high above the room suddenly groaned. The heavy iron chain holding it to the ceiling snapped with a deafening CRACK, sending tons of brass, crystal, and burning candles crashing down straight toward the bench where Maestro Salvatore was standing!
