Chapter 6 - THE FINAL REHEARSAL

"What have you done?!" Marcus roared, lunging forward on the rain-slicked roof.
Evelyn didn't run. She stood effortlessly at the edge, the storm howling around her worn dark clothes like a cloak of fury.
"I didn't trap her there, Detective," Evelyn said coldly, her voice sharp as glass. "Irina did. When Irina realized the police were distracted by the chandelier collapse, she dragged Clara into her private vault behind the mirror. She thinks the child has the cipher key hidden on her person. She is going to kill my daughter to keep her secret."
"Where is the detonator connected to?" Marcus demanded, pointing at the silver device in her hand.
"This isn't a bomb for the room," Evelyn replied, holding the small device up to the moonlight. "This is the trigger for the stage lights. In four minutes, the emergency gala begins. Irina is forcing the orchestra to play the final movement at gunpoint. She wants to claim the music before the press can question its origin."
Without waiting another second, Marcus turned and bolted down the rooftop stairs, his heart pounding against his ribs like a sledgehammer.
Inside the VIP dressing room below, the air was thick with the scent of cheap perfume, sweat, and gunpowder.
Irina Vance stood before her giant vanity mirror, holding a sleek silver revolver in her shaking hand. Her white tutu was torn, stained with gray dust, but her eyes were wide with a maniacal, feverish energy.
Cornered against the heavy steel door of the wall vault was little Clara. The real Clara. She sat on the floor, her knee bruised, but her face showed no fear. She stared up at the woman who had stolen her mother’s life.
"Give it to me!" Irina screamed, pointing the revolver directly at the young girl's head. "Where is the rest of the sheet music? Where did your mother put the final page?!"
"My mother didn't write the final page on paper," Clara said softly, her voice remarkably steady. "She wrote it on the stage floor. You can only dance it if you know the true cost."
"Shut up! Shut up!" Irina shrieked, striking the vanity table with her gun, shattering a perfume bottle into hundreds of sparkling shards. "I am the star! I am the Silver Swan! Not her! Not you! I worked for twenty years to stand under that spotlight!"
"You didn't work for it," Clara said quietly. "You bought it with blood."
Suddenly, the heavy iron door of the dressing room burst open.
BANG!
Detective Marcus charged into the room, gun drawn. "Drop the weapon, Irina! It's over! Pendelton is dead! The police force is taking over the building!"
Irina didn't drop the gun. Instead, she spun around and grabbed Clara by her collar, hauling the small girl in front of her as a human shield, pressing the cold barrel of the revolver hard against Clara’s temple.
"Don't come any closer, Marcus!" Irina warned, her voice cracking into a manic laugh. "If you step forward, I'll blow her brains all over this velvet carpet! Back off!"
"Irina, look at yourself!" Marcus pleaded, keeping his sights trained on her head. "You're a ballerina, not a murderer! Put the gun down and we can resolve this!"
"It was ALWAYS about survival!" Irina spat, tears smearing her heavy black eyeliner down her pale cheeks. "Evelyn was better than me! She was always better than me! The critics loved her, the Maestro loved her, the audience worshipped her! I was just her shadow! I had to take what was mine!"
From the dark hallway outside, a slow, gentle melody began to play.
It was a piano... playing the sweet, melancholic opening notes of the Lament of the Silver Swan.
Irina’s head snapped toward the door. "Who is playing that? The orchestra isn't on stage yet!"
The music grew louder, echoing through the empty stone corridors like an ancient ghost calling for its lost child.
Then, from the dark threshold of the doorway, a woman stepped into the light.
She wore no makeup. Her face was scarred across the left cheek, her clothes were wet and dark from the rain, but her posture was unmistakable. Her presence dominated the room with an authority that made the air feel thin.
Irina’s hands shook violently. The revolver wobbled against Clara’s head.
"Ev... Evelyn?" Irina breathed, her eyes bulging in utter, paralyzing terror. "No... no, no, no! I watched you sink! I watched you drown in the river! You died!"
Evelyn Claire took one calm step into the room. She didn't look at the gun. She didn't look at Marcus. Her eyes were fixed entirely on Irina.

"A swan does not drown in water, Irina," Evelyn said, her voice dropping into a low, terrifying melody that harmonized with the piano music outside. "It only waits for the ice to melt."
CHAPTER 6 HOOK: Evelyn slowly lifted her hand and pointed at the giant vanity mirror behind Irina. As Irina turned her head in terror, she didn't see her own reflection—she saw the reflections of Lord Sterling, Chief Pendelton, and Maestro Salvatore standing right behind her, their ghost-like eyes staring back through the glass!
