Chapter 4 - THE CURSE OF THE SILVER SWAN

CRASH!

The floor shook like an earthquake. Explosions of crystal, twisted metal, and flying embers filled the grand lobby. Dust screamed into the air, blinding everyone as screams of panic erupted.

"Get back! Clear the lobby!" Detective Marcus roared, drawing his revolver as dancers trampled over each other trying to reach the exit doors.

When the thick cloud of plaster and glass slowly settled, a horrific sight was revealed.

The massive chandelier had crushed the central marble fountain into powder. Sitting right at the edge of the destruction was Maestro Salvatore. He hadn't been crushed—he had been thrown back by the blast of air. But his right leg was pinned beneath a massive iron beam that held the light fixture together.

"My leg! God help me, my leg!" Salvatore shrieked, clutching his shattered limb as blood pooled onto the white marble floor.

"Hold on!" Marcus ran forward, straining against the heavy iron beam, but it was far too heavy for one man to lift. "I need help here! Someone grab a lever!"

None of the stagehands moved. They stood frozen in terror, looking not at Salvatore, but at the top of the grand staircase.

There, standing amidst the floating dust and smoke, was a figure dressed in a torn, black swan costume.

The dress was identical to the one Evelyn Claire had worn during her final, legendary performance seven years ago. The face was obscured by a dark, feathered mask, but through the eyeholes, two cold, glowing eyes stared down at the bleeding conductor.

Irina, backed against the wall, shrieked in sheer agony. "Evelyn! It's her! She's come back from the dead!"

"Don't move!" Detective Marcus aimed his revolver at the masked figure on the stairs. "Identify yourself right now or I will fire!"

The figure did not say a word. Instead, it slowly raised a gloved hand and pointed down at Salvatore. Then, with grace that seemed entirely unhuman, the figure performed a single, slow curtsy—the precise closing bow of the Silver Swan—and backed into the dark upper balcony shadows.

"Stop!" Marcus fired two shots into the air. BANG! BANG!

He turned to his officers. "Secure the perimeter! Don't let that thing leave the building!"

While the officers rushed up the stairs, Clara walked slowly through the smoke and broken glass. She stopped inches away from where Salvatore lay groaning in agony under the metal beam.

She knelt down beside him. Her little face was completely serene, untouched by the terror around her.

"Help me..." Salvatore gasped, reaching out a bloody hand toward the child. "Clara... please... call an ambulance... I'm bleeding out..."

Clara reached out her small hand, but she didn't grab his fingers. Instead, she picked up a sharp fragment of fallen crystal from the floor.

Salvatore’s eyes widened in terror. "What... what are you doing?"

Clara leaned in close to his ear, her young voice barely higher than a whisper over his agonizing groans.

"Do you remember the night on the bridge, Maestro?" Clara asked softly. "My mother begged you for help while she was holding onto the icy railing. She reached her hand out to you, just like you are reaching out to me now."

Salvatore sobbed, tears cutting clean lines through the soot on his face. "I... I was afraid! Sterling threatened to ruin my career! He threatened to kill my family!"

"And what did you do, Maestro?" Clara continued, her blue eyes piercing his soul. "You took your silver baton... and you struck her hands until she lost her grip."

Salvatore choked on his own breath. The sheer horror of his past sins slammed into him with the weight of a mountain.

"You broke her fingers," Clara whispered, holding up the sharp crystal piece. "So she couldn't hold on anymore."

"I'm sorry... I'm so sorry..." Salvatore wept, coughing up blood.

Clara gently placed the crystal piece into Salvatore’s bloody palm and folded his fingers over it.

"My mother forgives you," Clara said softly. "But the Swan does not."

She stood up and walked away, disappearing into the swirling smoke just as the paramedics finally breached the front doors with iron bars to lift the beam.

By the time they pulled Maestro Salvatore out from the wreckage, his mind was completely broken. He wasn't screaming from the pain in his shattered leg anymore. He was staring at his bloody hand, rocking back and forth, repeating the same four words over and over again to the empty air:

"She has no fingers... she has no fingers..."

CHAPTER 4 HOOK: As Detective Marcus pursued the masked figure onto the high roof of the opera house under the pouring rain, he finally cornered the suspect at the edge of the ledge. Marcus drew his gun and knocked the mask off—only to freeze in utter shock. The face behind the mask wasn't Evelyn Claire... it was the city's Chief of Police, carrying a satchel filled with millions in forged bearer bonds!
