Chapter 5 - The Trap is Sprung

At midnight, a heavy rainstorm rolled over Mexico City. The San Ángel neighborhood was dark, the streets slick with rain.
A shadow moved stealthily through the side gate of the Vega estate. Mateo and Valeria, wearing dark raincoats, slipped into the side entrance using a copied key they had kept hidden. They left Santiago asleep in the back of a rented economy car down the street.
"Hurry," Valeria whispered, her voice trembling with desperation. "The gold bullion and the old bonds are in the basement safe. If we take them, we can flee to Miami before the formal arrest warrants are signed tomorrow morning."
They moved silently through the dark kitchen, past the table where Santiago had slapped his grandmother just thirty-six hours prior. They reached the heavy oak door leading to the basement.
Mateo expertly picked the secondary lock. They descended the stone steps into the dark, damp cellar. In the corner stood the massive, antique iron safe that Alejandro Vega had installed decades ago.
"Open it!" Valeria urged, her eyes gleaming with greed. "Hurry!"
Mateo entered the combination: 0-7-1-6—his mother’s birthday, an irony that wasn't lost on him.
The heavy iron door clicked and swung open.
But instead of stacks of gold and bearer bonds, the safe was completely empty except for one thing: a small, black smartphone standing upright on a tripod, its recording light glowing a steady, menacing red.
Suddenly, the overhead stadium lights snapped on, blinding them both.
"Looking for this?" a calm voice called out from the stairs.
Mateo and Valeria spun around, shielding their eyes. Elena stood at the top of the stairs, flanked by Captain Ramirez of the Federal Police and three armed officers.
"Mom!" Mateo gasped, falling to his knees. "Please! It was Valeria’s idea! She forced me to come here!"
"You coward!" Valeria yelled, turning on her husband. "You were the one who stole the money!"
Elena looked down at them, her expression completely detached. There was no anger left in her—only the cold satisfaction of justice.

"You came to steal from a woman you thought was weak, broken, and helpless," Elena said softly. "But you forgot that I built this empire alongside your father. You didn't just commit grand theft; you have now committed aggravated burglary on camera. Captain, take them away."
As the handcuffs clicked around their wrists, Valeria screamed curses, her fake, glamorous life officially shattered into pieces.
