Chapter 1 - The First AuditThe gray October afternoon deepened into a heavy, suffocating dusk as I sat in the rented Nissan, watching the light flicker on inside Unit 114.

For six years, Terrence had spent four days every October attending the "Regional Logistics and Supply Chain Symposium" in Atlanta. For six years, he had sent me the exact same photograph—a tarnished brass key tag stamped Room 412—resting against a generic nightstand. I had framed our life around those business trips, adjusting my own forensic accounting clients to make sure I was home to feed his dogs, water his plants, and welcome him back with his favorite meal.

Now, sitting forty yards away from a townhouse I had never known existed, I realized every single keychain photo had been a lie. He hadn't been in Atlanta. Or perhaps he had gone to Atlanta, but only long enough to check into a hotel before flying somewhere else, or keeping this apartment running like a well-oiled machine while I played the dutiful wife back home.

I reached into my bag, pulled out my laptop, and popped open the screen. The dashboard glowed softly against the dark steering wheel.

If Terrence had a second home, he needed a second income stream to sustain it. Or worse—he was siphoning funds from our shared marital assets.

As a forensic accountant, I spent my days tearing apart corporate balance sheets, hunting down hidden liabilities, and exposing people who thought they were smarter than the ledger. I had spent twelve years trusting my husband blindly, never once auditing our own household.

That was about to change.
