Chapter 1 - The Weight of a Cold RoomThe phone call connected on the second ring. A receptionist at the hotel’s security desk answered with crisp, practiced indifference, asking how she could assist.

“This is Avery Holston,” Avery said, her voice cutting through the heavy silence of the bridal suite hallway like a pane of glass. “I’m standing outside Suite 1814. I need the front desk supervisor and a hotel security manager sent up here immediately. Do not clear the electronic log, and ensure the hallway cameras facing the double doors are secured.”

Across the room, Grant took a sharp step forward, his hand raised as if to intercept the phone. “Avery, don’t do this. You’re making a scene over nothing. We can talk about this down in the car—just let’s handle this privately.”

“Privately?” Avery repeated the word, her gaze shifting slowly from Grant’s panicked eyes to Kira, who was desperately trying to re-pin her hair with shaking fingers. “You’re standing in my brother’s bridal suite four hours after his wedding, surrounded by pre-packed travel bags, while my husband’s wedding ring sits on a marble vanity. And you want to handle it privately?”

Kira let out a sharp, breathless laugh, though there was no humor in it. “You act like you didn't see this coming, Avery.”

Avery froze. “What did you say?”

Kira lowered her hands, her dark eyes suddenly hard, devoid of the sweet, demure innocence she had projected all afternoon at the altar. “For months, Nolan has talked about nothing but building a family, buying a fixer-upper house, settling down in the suburbs. And Grant... Grant wanted out of this dead marriage long before tonight. We didn't ruin anything. We just accelerated what was already broken.”

The blunt, calculated cruelty of Kira’s words hit Avery harder than the sight of them together.

It wasn't a sudden lapse in judgment. It wasn't a drunken mistake fueled by wedding champagne. It was a planned exit strategy. A coordinated betrayal designed to detonate two families on the exact same night.
