Chapter 1 - The Descent From the AltarThe applause was still ringing in the grand ballroom, a sickening wave of validation for a man who had just traded my life's security for cheap applause. Diane was weeping tears of pure triumph into a lace handkerchief, her shoulders shaking with melodramatic joy.

Ethan turned back toward the altar, his face flushed with the high of his own performance. He looked at me, expecting me to beam with pride, to validate his grand gesture of filial piety.

Instead, I lowered my bouquet of white roses onto a nearby flower pedestal. The movement was deliberate, slow, and dead silent.

"Oanh?" Ethan whispered, his smile faltering just a fraction. The microphone clipped to his lapel picked up the slight waver in his voice, broadcasting it quietly across the hidden speakers. "Babe? What’s wrong? Aren’t you happy? Mom has dreamed of a real home for years..."

"Ethan," I said, my voice carrying clearly through the crisp air of the ballroom. I didn't yell. I didn't need to. "Whose house did you just promise to your mother?"

He blinked, a flicker of irritation crossing his handsome, lawyerly features. "We talked about this, or... well, you know how much Mom means to me. Maple Ridge. It’s security for her. What’s mine is ours, and what’s ours is family."

"What’s yours?" I repeated, letting out a short, cold laugh that cut right through the ambient murmurs of the confused guests. I stepped back, smoothing down the heavy silk of my wedding dress. "Ethan, look at me. Look at these two hundred people who flew in to watch a marriage that isn't going to happen."

"Stop joking around," he muttered, grabbing for my hand. "The officiant is waiting. We have to exchange rings."

"I am not joking," I said, snatching my hand away as if his touch burned. I turned to face the crowd. Two hundred pairs of eyes stared back—shocked, transfixed, waiting for the punchline. Diane had stopped crying, her eyes narrowing into cold, hard slits.

"Everyone," I announced, raising my voice so it bounced off the crystal chandeliers. "The wedding is cancelled. Ethan, pack your bags. You don't own Maple Ridge. You don't even own the clothes on your back without my permission."
