Chapter 1 - The First RowThe morning air of the Langham Chicago’s grand ballroom smelled of imported white roses and old money. Chandeliers hung like frozen waterfalls from the gold-leaf ceiling, casting a dazzling light over two hundred of the city’s elite. Investors, corporate lawyers, and society figures mingled with glasses of champagne, whispering about the union of Ryan Brooks and Lauren Vance.

At the front of the hall, the altar was flanked by massive floral arrangements—ironically, white lilies.
I stood near the back, wearing a tailored navy wool coat that completely concealed my postpartum frame. My skin was still pale from the hospital stay, and a dull ache thudded in my lower back, but my mind was sharper than it had ever been. Tucked securely inside my leather portfolio was the certified birth certificate reading Willa Brooks, alongside the DNA paternity test and the explosive forensic audit linking Halcyon Strategic Holdings directly to my stolen inheritance.
Ryan had personally left a seat for me in the first row, right behind his mother. He had assumed I would sit there out of lingering humiliation, weeping quietly behind dark sunglasses while he paraded his pregnant mistress down the aisle.
The string quartet transitioned into the traditional wedding march. Heads turned as Lauren appeared at the double doors. She looked radiant in a custom ivory silk gown, her hand resting over a slight, deliberate baby bump. Ryan stood at the altar, his chest puffed out with the supreme confidence of a man who believed he had conquered the world.
When Lauren reached the altar, Ryan turned, his eyes sweeping across the front row until they landed directly on me.

A cruel, smug smile flickered across his face. He actually nodded at me, as if thanking me for showing up to witness his ultimate triumph. I didn't look away. I didn't flinch. I simply opened my leather folder just an inch, letting the corner of the forensic audit peek out before snapping it shut.
Ryan’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second. His brow furrowed, but the minister began speaking, forcing Ryan to turn back around and recite his vows.
