Chapter 2 - The Mask Falls off the Empire

Facebook Hook: 😲 The groom’s father turned white as a sheet when the 'poor mother' made one phone call. "Who is she?!" he screamed. The truth behind the $10B empire was finally exposed! 😲

The ride back from Valle de Bravo was dead silent. Valeria sat in the passenger seat of their modest sedan, still wearing her designer wedding dress, though she had ripped the tulle train off to fit into the car. Her mind was spinning in a thousand different directions.

Beside her, Elena drove with a calm, practiced precision. The simple navy-blue dress she wore looked entirely out of place against the sudden, suffocating realization that her mother was keeping a massive secret.

"Mom," Valeria finally whispered, her voice cracking. "What did you mean back there? Who is Federico? What lease agreements?"

Elena kept her eyes on the dark, winding highway leading away from the luxury resort town. "I owe you an apology, Valeria. For twenty-four years, I raised you in a small house in Puebla. I let you watch me come home with blistered hands from the textile factory. I let you believe we had to scrape pennies together for your university tuition."

"Was... was that all a lie?" Valeria felt a pang of hurt mixed with confusion.

"The factory was real," Elena said softly. "I did work there. But I didn't work there for the wage, Valeria. I owned the factory. I owned the land it sat on. I owned the entire supply chain."

Valeria gasped, her breath catching in her throat. "Why? Why would you live like that if we were rich?"

"Because of what money did to the people around me," Elena replied, her voice tinged with an old, deep sorrow. "Your father... when he discovered the extent of my family’s wealth, he changed. He became greedy, cruel, and arrogant. He ruined himself trying to steal what was mine, and he died surrounded by fake friends who only loved his wallet. When I had you, I swore I would never let you grow up with the curse of unearned privilege. I wanted you to love honest work. I wanted you to find people who loved you for you, not for a bank account."

Elena reached over, squeezing Valeria’s hand. "And tonight, the test worked. It broke your heart, and for that, I am deeply sorry. But it showed you the truth of Santiago De la Vega before you signed your life away to a monster."

"And the De la Vegas?" Valeria asked, her heart hammering against her ribs. "Who are they to us?"

Elena’s lips curved into a cold, rare smile. "Thirty years ago, a young, ambitious man named Alejandro De la Vega came to my father begging for a loan to build his very first luxury boutique hotel. My father liked his drive, so he granted him a 99-year land lease for three prime locations across Mexico, under one strict condition: the land, and any structures built upon it, would remain under the absolute ownership of our family holding company, Continental Holdings. If the De la Vega family ever brought public disrepute or moral turpitude to our name, the leases could be terminated instantly."

Valeria stared at her mother in absolute awe. "So their hotels... their entire luxury empire..."

"Sits on my land," Elena finished the sentence. "And as of five minutes ago, they are officially trespassing."

Meanwhile, back at the estate in Valle de Bravo, the wedding of the year had devolved into a scene of absolute chaos. The guests were hurriedly leaving, whispering furiously into their phones.

Inside the private bridal suite, Alejandro De la Vega was throwing crystal glasses against the wall, his face purple with rage.

"Find her!" Alejandro screamed at his assistant, who was frantically typing on a laptop. "Find out exactly who Elena Fuentes is! Now!"

Lorena sat on the plush sofa, fanning herself with a silk handkerchief. "Alejandro, calm down! She’s a crazy factory worker from Puebla! She probably looked up some names on the internet to scare us. Santiago, talk to your father! Tell him Valeria’s mother is just a delusional peasant!"

Santiago stood near the window, his mind racing. He remembered Valeria’s mother—how she always refused to ride in their luxury cars, how she politely declined their invitations to expensive restaurants. He had thought she was intimidated. Now, a cold dread was settling deep in his stomach.

"Dad," Santiago muttered, turning around. "Valeria never asked me for a single dime. When I bought her that diamond necklace, she looked uncomfortable. What if... what if it's true?"

"Shut up!" Fernanda snapped. "She’s a nobody! Dad, call the police! Have them arrested for disrupting a private event and threatening us!"

Before Alejandro could scream at his daughter, his phone rang. The caller ID showed the name of the Chief Legal Counsel for De la Vega Hospitality.

Alejandro snatched the phone, pressing it to his ear. "Mauricio! Tell me you're calling to tell me the press has been handled!"

"Alejandro..." The lawyer’s voice was shaking so violently it was audible through the speaker. "We have a catastrophic problem. We just received an official, notarized eviction notice from Continental Holdings."

"What?!" Alejandro roared. "That's impossible! The Continental lease has sixty years left! They can't just evict us!"

"They invoked the moral turpitude and reputational damage clause, Alejandro. The notice was signed by the primary stakeholder of Continental Holdings... a woman named Elena Fuentes."

Alejandro’s phone slipped from his hand, crashing onto the hardwood floor. He looked up at his wife and children, his eyes wide with horror.

"Dad?" Santiago asked, his voice trembling. "What is it?"

"We're ruined," Alejandro whispered, collapsing into a chair. "The woman you just called a cleaning lady... owns everything we have."
