Chapter 4 - THE NURSERY’S DARK SECRETThat night, the nursery door creaked open. Clare was sitting on the floor, the document clutched in her hand. She had turned off all the lights.

"Clare?" Ryan’s voice was soft, hesitant. "Why are you sitting in the dark?"

Clare stood up, her grief hardening into a blade of pure, cold rage. "Why did you really pick me up, Ryan? Was it the dumpster? Or was it the fact that you needed to keep your biggest mistake under lock and key?"

Ryan went still. The air in the room seemed to vanish.

"I didn't know it was you that night, Clare," he whispered, his composure fracturing. "I saw two freezing babies, and I saw a woman who looked like... like the daughter I lost."

Clare froze. "The daughter?"

Ryan gestured to the crib—the one she had been haunted by for weeks. "My wife and daughter died three years ago. The structural collapse at Horizon Tower didn't just kill David. It collapsed the entire lobby of the tower. They were there to visit me for lunch. My daughter was in that exact crib."
