Chapter 1 - The Ringing Phone That Shattered Ten YearsThe harsh fluorescent lights of the hospital room hummed overhead, a mechanical drone that cut through the thick, sterile silence. On the other side of the room, Luke’s face had drained of its arrogant color. For a decade, he had been the architect of my isolation,

He didn't know memory could be a weapon.

The nurse held the landline receiver tightly against her ear, her eyes never leaving Luke's twitching hands. On the second ring, a sharp, crisp voice picked up on the other end.

"Hello? This is Clara Vance, Director of Vance Global Legal. Who is this?"

Hearing my older sister’s voice after years of forced silence felt like water hitting a parched throat. I hadn't seen Clara since my wedding day—a wedding Luke had heavily orchestrated to ensure none of my family members could attend without being insulted or turned away. Back then, Clara was a junior corporate attorney working late nights. Now, according to her title, she was someone far more dangerous.

Before the nurse could speak, Luke lunged forward, his face contorted into a mask of pure panic and rage. "Hang up the phone! That's a wrong number! My wife is delirious, she doesn't know what she's saying—"

"Step back, sir. Security is already outside," the attending physician said coldly, gesturing toward the heavy door. Two broad-shouldered security guards stepped into the room instantly, their presence blocking Luke’s path like a concrete wall.

The nurse ignored him completely. "Ms. Vance? My name is Nurse Ramirez at St. Jude Memorial Hospital. I am calling on behalf of your sister, Caroline Vance... now Caroline Hayes."

Silence fell over the line. It was a heavy, suffocating silence that seemed to drop the temperature in the room by ten degrees.

When Clara spoke next, the professional edge had vanished entirely, replaced by a cold, razor-sharp fury that could slice glass. "Did you say Caroline? My sister Caroline? Put her on the phone right now. And if Luke Hayes is anywhere near her, tell him that if she has a single new scratch on her body, I will personally disbar every lawyer he ever hires, freeze every asset he owns, and tear his life apart piece by piece."

Luke stopped struggling against the security guards. The color drained completely from his face, leaving him looking like a ghost caught in broad daylight. He knew the name Vance Global Legal. Everyone in the financial district did. What Luke never knew—because he had actively blocked me from watching the news or reading the financial papers for the last seven years—was that Clara hadn't just stayed a lawyer. She had become one of the most ruthless corporate litigators and asset recovery specialists in the country, inheriting our grandfather's empire and turning it into an absolute juggernaut.

I swallowed hard, the bandages pulling tight across my chest, and spoke into the air toward the nurse's phone.

"Clara..." My voice was a gravelly whisper, broken by pain, but it carried the unmistakable weight of truth. "Clara, get me out of here. He killed them. He killed all of them."

"I'm coming, sweetie," Clara said, her voice dropping into a tone so icy and lethal it sent a chill down my spine. "Lock the doors. Do not let Luke Hayes touch her, do not let him sign a single discharge paper, and hold every medical report. I am chartering a private jet right now. I'll be there in three hours."

The line went dead with a click.

Luke stood frozen, the security guards holding his arms firmly behind his back. The mask of the charming, patient husband had completely disintegrated, revealing the small, cowardly tyrant beneath.

"Caroline," Luke whispered, his voice cracking with a desperate, pathetic tremor. "You're making a mistake. We're a family. You love me..."

I looked at him—really looked at him—for the first time in ten years. The terror that had ruled my bones evaporated, replaced by a cold, burning fire.

"No, Luke," I whispered back, my eyes locked onto his. "My name is Caroline Vance. And your nightmare is just beginning."
