Chapter 5 - The Web TightensBack in the city, the legal noose around Luke Hayes was pulling tighter by the minute.

News outlets had already caught wind of the story. Headlines blazed across morning television screens and financial blogs: “Tech & Venture Capital Prodigy Luke Hayes Arrested in Brutal Domestic Violence and Multi-Million Dollar Embezzlement Scandal.”

Investors who had poured millions into Hayes Ventures were panicking. Creditors were swarming the corporate offices like vultures. And the federal prosecutors, armed with the evidence Marcus and Clara provided, were preparing a multi-count indictment that carried a guaranteed sentence of no less than forty years without parole.

Luke, still sitting in the high-security detention center, was beginning to realize the true scale of his destruction.

He had demanded a phone call with his defense attorney—a high-priced corporate lawyer named Richard Sterling, who had previously helped Luke sweep several minor scandals under the rug.

When Sterling walked into the attorney-client meeting room, he didn't look like a savior; he looked like a man who wanted to wash his hands of a plague victim.

"Sterling! Thank God," Luke barked, slamming his cuffed hands onto the table. "Get me out of here. Post bail, file a motion to suppress the asset freeze, do whatever it takes! I need my accounts unfrozen!"

Sterling sat down slowly, opening a sleek leather briefcase. He didn't make eye contact. Instead, he slid a single piece of paper across the table.

"I'm resigning as your legal counsel, Luke," Sterling said flatly.

Luke stared at him, stunned. "Resigning? Are you insane? I've paid you a fortune over the last five years! You represent me!"

"I represented a successful venture capitalist with liquidity and influence," Sterling corrected him, his voice cold and professional. "I do not represent a bankrupt, indicted felon facing federal charges of attempted murder and systematic domestic terrorism orchestrated against the sister of Clara Vance."

Luke’s face flushed a violent shade of red. "Clara Vance has no jurisdiction over my business! Hayes Ventures is a separate legal entity!"

"Was a separate legal entity," Sterling corrected quietly. "Vance Global Legal bought out our law firm's primary debt holdings this morning. Furthermore, they filed an injunction proving that the initial seed capital for Hayes Ventures was embezzled directly from Caroline Vance’s maternal trust fund. Legally speaking, Luke... you never owned a single brick of your empire. You were just a squatter renting space in the Vance family's shadow."

The last piece of Luke’s armor cracked. He slumped backward in his chair, his chest heaving, realization finally dawning on him. He hadn't just lost his wife; he had lost his money, his status, his freedom, and his entire fabricated identity.

"Where is she?" Luke whispered hoarsely, his voice trembling with pathetic desperation. "Where is Caroline?"

"She's preparing for trial," Sterling said, standing up and buttoning his jacket. "And based on the evidence her family has compiled, you'll be lucky if you ever see the sun rise outside of a maximum-security prison cell again."
