Chapter 2 - The Collapse of the MaskWithin two hours, the hospital room transformed from a quiet medical ward into a fortress.

Word had apparently traveled fast once Clara Vance’s name was dropped to the hospital administration. The Chief of Medicine himself walked into the room accompanied by the head of legal compliance, ensuring that every single chart, X-ray, and photographic piece of evidence was duplicated, encrypted, and locked in a secure vault.

Luke had been escorted out of the room by hospital security, but he wasn't allowed to leave the building. Clara had coordinated with local police before her plane even touched down; two state troopers were currently stationed outside his detention room down the hall, ensuring he couldn't flee, destroy evidence, or contact his associates.

I sat propped up against a mountain of pillows, sipping ice water through a straw as a plastic surgeon examined the burns along my collarbone and arms.

"The scarring will require extensive dermatological treatment, Ms. Hayes—or rather, Ms. Vance," the surgeon corrected himself smoothly, offering a sympathetic smile. "Given the nature of the third-degree burns caused by the scalding liquid, we will need to look into skin-graft options once you're stabilized. But structurally, your internal organs are showing remarkable resilience, thanks to your youth and baseline health."

"Will I... will I ever be able to carry a child safely?" I asked, the question slipping out before I could stop it. The memory of the doctor's words—you were never actually infertile, you were pregnant with sons, but you killed them before they were born—still echoed in my head like a curse.

The surgeon’s expression softened into deep sorrow. "Yes, Caroline. The X-rays and comprehensive scans show zero anatomical defects. Your reproductive system is entirely healthy. The reason your previous pregnancies ended prematurely was due to severe, repeated physical trauma and extreme systemic shock—in other words, the brutal physical abuse you suffered at home induced continuous miscarriages. You didn't fail to have children, Luke's violence murdered them."

Hearing it confirmed out loud felt like a physical blow, but this time, it didn't break me. It fueled the inferno inside my chest.

He knew.

Every time I cried over a lost baby, every time he forced me to drink bitter herbal teas he claimed would "fix my broken womb," every time he told me I was cursed—he knew the truth. He was the one poisoning the soil so nothing could grow. He wanted me weak, dependent, and perpetually grieving, trapped in a cycle of self-blame.

At that exact moment, the heavy double doors of the room swung open with a dramatic bang.

Clara Vance strode into the room.

She looked like a storm incarnate. Dressed in a bespoke Armani navy-blue pantsuit, her sharp blonde hair pulled back into a severe, elegant chignon, and designer sunglasses pushed up onto her head, she radiated terrifying power. She didn't look like a grieving sister; she looked like an executioner stepping onto a battlefield.

She stopped dead in her tracks when she saw me—the bandages wrapped tightly around my arms, the IV lines taped to the back of my hand, the pale, bruised hollows of my cheeks.

For a fraction of a second, the iron facade cracked. Clara’s breath hitched, and her eyes welled up with hot tears. She rushed to the bedside, dropping her leather briefcase on the floor, and gently—so gently, as if handling spun glass—took my uninjured hand in hers.

"Look at what he did to you," Clara choked out, pressing my knuckles to her cheek. "Ten years... that monster kept me away from you for ten years. I searched for you everywhere, Caroline. I hired private investigators, I checked public records, but he had you locked away in that isolated estate in the mountains under a completely locked-down privacy trust."

"He told me you didn't care," I whispered, tears finally spilling over my lashes. "He said you changed your number and abandoned me after the wedding."

Clara’s jaw tightened, and the warmth in her eyes vanished, replaced by a look of pure, unadulterated slaughter.

"I never stopped looking for you," she whispered fiercely. Then, straightening up, she turned to the doctor and the police officer standing near the corner. "What is the status of the arrest warrant?"

"Attempted murder, aggravated domestic violence, unlawful imprisonment, and fetal homicide," a sharp voice answered from the doorway.

A tall man in a tailored charcoal suit stepped into the room. He flashed a federal badge. "Special Agent Marcus Vance, FBI Domestic Division. Though Clara is my cousin, I'm handling the federal crossover jurisdiction here. Luke Hayes didn't just abuse you, Caroline. We’ve been running a quiet financial probe on his business holdings for the past six months. It turns out his entire wealth, his real estate portfolio, and his luxury lifestyle were built entirely on corporate embezzlement, shell companies, and systematic financial fraud—stealing millions from investors while pretending to be a successful venture capitalist."

Marcus stepped closer, a confident, predatory grin touching the corner of his mouth. "In short? Luke Hayes isn't just going away for attempted murder. We are going to strip him down to his skin, take every penny he owns, and throw him into a federal penitentiary where he will spend the rest of his natural life staring at four concrete walls."

I looked from Marcus to Clara, a slow, vindictive smile spreading across my cracked lips.

Luke thought he was a king in his castle. He was about to find out he was standing on a house of cards during a hurricane.
