Chapter 3 - The Interrogation Room DramaDown in the basement holding cells of the precinct, the atmosphere was thick with the smell of cheap coffee, disinfectant, and desperation.

Luke Hayes sat at the stainless-steel interrogation table, handcuffed to a metal ring in the center. His expensive designer shirt was wrinkled, his hair disheveled, and the confident, smug aura he wore like armor was completely gone. He was sweating profusely, his eyes darting frantically toward the one-way mirror.

The heavy steel door swung open, and Detective Miller walked in, followed not by a local prosecutor, but by Clara Vance herself.

Luke slammed his hands down on the table, the handcuffs rattling loudly. "What is she doing in here? This is an official police interrogation! Civilians aren't allowed—"

"Shut your mouth, Luke," Clara said coldly. She didn't sit down. She stood over him like a judge passing a death sentence, dropping a thick manila folder onto the metal table with a deafening slap.

Luke swallowed hard, trying to regain his composure. He forced a sickly, patronizing smile onto his face—the exact same smile he used to wear when guests came over to mask his tyranny. "Clara... darling. You look well. Listen, there's been a massive misunderstanding. Caroline is unstable, you know how fragile her mental health has always been. She had a severe episode, she knocked the boiling water pot over herself in a fit of hysteria. I tried to save her! I rushed her to the hospital!"

Clara didn't blink. She slowly pulled out a document from the folder and slid it across the table.

Luke glanced down at it, and the remaining color in his face vanished entirely.

It was not a medical report. It was an asset forfeiture notice, stamped with federal seals and signed by a federal judge.

"What... what is this?" Luke stammered, his voice pitching upward in panic.

"This is the beginning of the end of your pathetic existence, Luke," Clara said evenly, her voice dripping with lethal calm. "As of thirty minutes ago, Vance Global Legal filed emergency freezing orders on all eighty-four bank accounts, three offshore holding companies, the mountain estate, your luxury cars, and every single corporate asset registered under Hayes Ventures."

"You can't do that!" Luke shrieked, jumping half out of his chair before the handcuffs yanked him back down. "That's my company! That's my money! I earned every cent!"

"You didn't earn a damn thing," Marcus Vance said, stepping out from the shadows near the corner of the room, holding a tablet displaying a complex web of financial transactions. "We tracked the capital injection for your startup back in 2018. It wasn't venture capital, Luke. It was embezzled trust funds originally settled under our grandfather's estate—money that legally belonged to Caroline as part of her maternal inheritance, which you forced her to sign away under duress during your first year of marriage."

Luke stared at Marcus, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. "That's... that's impossible. No one was supposed to find that..."

"No one except a team of forensic accountants who spend their entire lives hunting white-collar predators like you," Marcus replied smoothly. "And that's just the financial side. Let's talk about the medical records. The hospital ran a full toxicology and forensic tissue analysis on the scalding patterns. The angle of the splash, the depth of the third-degree burns across Caroline's chest and internal organs, and the physical trauma markers match a deliberate, sustained assault—not an accidental spill. The nurse recorded your exact words when you brought her in: 'She slipped near the stove.' Except the stove in your kitchen hasn't been turned on in three days, according to the smart-home gas logs we pulled from your Wi-Fi router."

The room went dead silent. You could hear the faint hum of the fluorescent light overhead.

Luke slowly sank back into his chair, his shoulders sagging, his bravado entirely shattered. He realized, with sudden, terrifying clarity, that there was no lie left that could save him. The traps he had laid for me over a decade had finally snapped shut around his own neck.

"You're ruining me," Luke whispered, a pathetic tear rolling down his cheek. "Caroline loved me once. She wouldn't want this..."

"Caroline remembers every single day you starved her, beat her, and murdered her unborn children," Clara said, leaning down so her face was inches from his, her eyes burning with righteous fury. "And I promise you, Luke—when we are finished with you, you won't even have a name left to ruin."
