Chapter 6 - The Trap Sprung at Lake Zurich

The Grand Hotel Dolder in Zurich was renowned for hosting the world’s elite—tycoons, politicians, and kings. Tonight, it hosted a high-stakes private charity gala overlooking the shimmering expanse of Lake Zurich.
Damian Voss stood near the back of the grand ballroom, holding a glass of bourbon he had no intention of drinking.
He looked older than his years. The ruthless confidence that had once defined him was now edged with a dangerous, paranoid desperation. For over a year, his empire had been systematically dismantled from the inside out. Anonymous shell corporations had bought up his corporate debt, frozen his Swiss accounts, and sabotaged his shipping routes across the Atlantic.
He was losing everything. And worse, he had spent sixteen months searching every corner of the globe for his missing wife and child, only to find absolute ghosts.
"Mr. Voss?"
Damian turned sharply. A young, impeccably dressed Swiss banker stood before him, holding a golden envelope.
"What is it?" Damian snapped.
"The primary stakeholder of Aegis Capital—the firm that currently holds over sixty percent of your corporate debt—has requested a private meeting with you. Tonight. In the private terrace suite upstairs."
Damian’s eyes narrowed. For months, he had tried to secure a meeting with the elusive head of Aegis Capital, only to be stonewalled at every turn.
"Lead the way," Damian growled, setting his glass down on a passing waiter's tray.
He strode down the private marble hallway, his bodyguards trailing closely behind him. The hotel security guard pushed open the heavy mahogany doors of the terrace suite, gesturing for Damian to enter alone.
Damian stepped inside.
The suite was dimly lit, illuminated only by the soft, ambient glow of the city lights reflecting off the dark surface of the lake outside. The sliding glass balcony doors stood wide open, letting in a cool evening breeze.
Standing by the balcony railing, her back turned to him, was a woman in a backless emerald-silk evening gown that hugged her tall, elegant figure. Her dark hair cascaded down her bare shoulders in soft, polished waves.
"You’ve made quite a game of hiding from me, Aegis," Damian said, stepping forward, his voice dripping with dangerous curiosity. "Whoever you are, you’ve cost me billions. Turn around and let's discuss terms."
The woman did not move immediately. She slowly turned her glass of red wine in her fingers, watching the deep crimson liquid swirl against the crystal.
Then, she turned around.
Damian stopped dead in his tracks. The breath caught violently in his throat, and for the first time in his entire life, the legendary crime boss felt his knees go weak.
It was Elena.
Gone was the heavy wool coat, the pale, exhausted face, and the terrified woman standing in the Colorado snow. In her place stood a queen—radiant, breathtaking, and radiating an aura of terrifying, untouchable power.
"Hello, Damian," Elena said, her voice smooth, calm, and utterly devoid of warmth.
Damian stared at her, his dark eyes wide with utter disbelief. He took two staggering steps forward, reaching out a trembling hand.
"Elena..." he whispered, the name sounding broken on his lips. "My God... Elena. You’re alive. I’ve searched everywhere for you. For sixteen months, I—"
"Save the performance, Damian," Elena interrupted, her voice snapping like a whip, freezing him in his tracks. "You didn't search for a wife. You searched for your missing property."
Damian shook his head rapidly, desperation creeping into his voice for the first time. "I was a fool. I was blind. But I never stopped thinking about you. Come home with me. We can fix this. We have a family—"
"A family?" Elena let out a cold, sharp laugh that cut straight through his chest. "You left a seven-month pregnant woman to freeze in a blizzard while you flew across the world with your mistress. You didn't care if I lived or died. You only cared about your control."
"I can give you anything!" Damian shouted, stepping closer, his old arrogance trying to resurface. "Name your price! Money, power, shares in Voss Global—everything I have is yours!"
Elena stepped slowly out of the shadows, walking right up to him. She was only a foot shorter than him, but her presence towered over him like a mountain.
She reached into her evening clutch, pulled out a thick leather-bound folder, and tossed it carelessly onto the glass table between them.

Damian looked down. It was his own stolen ledger. The Vance Holdings file.
"You can't buy back what you destroyed, Damian," Elena whispered, her eyes burning into his soul with a fierce, blinding intensity. "And as for your empire... you don't own it anymore. I do."
