Chapter 2 - The Pharmacy of the DamnedThe descent into the sub-basement felt like walking into the grave they had all attended six months ago. The stone walls leaked moisture, smelling of damp earth, old iron, and stale medicine. Noah flicked on the flashlight of his phone, illuminating a narrow corridor lined with locked metal doors, identical to the holding cells of a maximum-security prison.

"Mommy?" Lily cried out, breaking protocol, her voice echoing down the stone tunnel.

"Don't run ahead!" Noah hissed, grabbing her hand as they sprinted toward the third door down, where a flickering overhead bulb hummed miserably.

Through the reinforced wire-mesh window of the heavy steel door, a pale, emaciated face peered out. Sunken eyes stared back from dark, hollow sockets, skin stretched taut over high cheekbones. It was a face they both recognized from old photographs, though time, starvation, and profound terror had ravaged it beyond normal recognition.

"Elena?" Noah breathed, dropping his phone as his knees buckled.

"My babies..." The woman inside pressed her trembling palms against the glass. Her voice was shredded, little more than a dry rasp. "You shouldn't have found this place. Vanessa... if Vanessa finds out you're down here, she’ll kill you both before she finishes me."

"We found the letters, Mom," Noah said, pressing his face against the cold metal. "We know she locked you away after the fake fire. But Dad... where is Dad in all of this? Does he know?"

Elena let out a hollow, broken laugh that turned into a violent coughing fit. She gripped the metal bars for support, coughing up a speck of blood before catching her breath.

"Your father didn't just look the other way, Noah," Elena whispered, her eyes wide with a terrifying, absolute horror. "He signed the admission papers. He’s the one who traded me away to keep the estate from going under. Vanessa didn't break into our family—she was hired to manage the liquidation."

"Liquidation of what?" Lily asked, her innocent voice cutting through the damp gloom like a knife.

Before Elena could answer, a heavy steel security door at the far end of the corridor slammed shut with a thunderous bang. The lights flickered and died, plunging the sub-basement into absolute, suffocating darkness.

Heavy, deliberate footsteps echoed down the stone steps. Slow. Controlled. Terrifyingly calm.

"Well, well," Vanessa’s voice drifted down the corridor, accompanied by the sharp click-clack of her heels against the concrete floor. "Children really are a plague. You clean up one mess, and another crawls out of the woodwork."

A beam of a high-powered flashlight cut through the dark, pinning Noah and Lily against the steel door of their mother's cell. Vanessa stood at the end of the hall, holding a heavy leather medical bag in one hand and a silver-plated syringe in the other.

"Did you really think your little midnight excursion would go unnoticed?" Vanessa smiled, her eyes gleaming with manic delight in the white glare of the light. "Your father gave me complete legal custody of your medical and psychological welfare. Do you know what happens to stubborn children who suffer from 'severe hysterical delusions'?"

Noah stepped in front of Lily, his fists clenched so tightly his fingernails drew blood from his palms. "You're a monster."

"I’m a businesswoman, darling," Vanessa replied smoothly, taking a step closer. "And this family has far too many secrets to let a couple of brats ruin a billion-dollar empire. Now... let’s tuck you into bed permanently."
