Chapter 3 - The Ledger of the LostThe syringe caught the fluorescent glare like a lethal fang. Vanessa stepped closer, her expression completely devoid of human emotion, wrapped entirely in the chilling serenity of a predator finishing a hunt.

"Hold her down, Noah," Vanessa commanded smoothly, her tone suggesting she was asking for the salt at dinner. "Or watch your brother—er, your sister—take the first dose. It’s quite painless, really. A sudden, massive drop in blood pressure. Heart failure. Very clean. The coroner in our pocket has already signed off on the template."
"You won't get away with this," Noah snarled, backing up until his spine hit the freezing steel bars of his mother's cell. Inside, Elena was screaming silently, beating her bruised fists against the wire-mesh window, begging them to run.
"Get away with what? Protecting my grieving husband from his unhinged, delusional children?" Vanessa laughed softly. "The police love a grieving stepmother. They despise unruly orphans."
Before Vanessa could lunge forward, a sudden, deafening crash shook the sub-basement ceiling. Dust and flakes of concrete rained down on them. A muffled, heavy thud echoed from the upper floor, followed by the sound of shouting and shattering glass.
Vanessa froze, her head snapping upward toward the ceiling vents. For the first time, a flicker of genuine panic crossed her flawless features. "What the hell is going on up there?"
"Sounds like someone broke in," Noah mocked, a desperate spark of hope igniting in his chest. "Could it be Dad? Did he finally realize what you are?"
"Your father couldn't tie his own shoes without my permission," Vanessa hissed, though she backed away from the cell door, her eyes darting between the children and the exit stairs. She shoved the syringe into her leather medical bag, spun on her heel, and sprinted back up the stairs, screaming into her phone as she ran: "Security! Clear the perimeter! Lock down the west wing!"
The moment she disappeared, Noah threw himself against the heavy emergency release lever on the side of his mother's cell door. It groaned, rusted joints protesting, but with a mighty heave, the steel bolt slid back with a deafening pop.
The door swung open. Elena collapsed forward into Noah’s arms, trembling violently.
"We have to get out of here. Now," Elena gasped, clutching both children to her chest. "That noise upstairs... that wasn't a break-in. That was the auditors. And if they found the safe in your father's study before Vanessa could clean it out, we are all dead meat."

"What safe?" Lily asked, holding her mother’s skeletal hand.
"The safe containing the truth," Elena whispered, her eyes wild with adrenaline as she dragged them toward the secret exit stairs leading up into the main house. "Your father didn't just sell me out to Vanessa. He built his entire fortune on disappearing people just like me—and Vanessa was his favorite cleaner long before she became his wife."
