Chapter 6 - Free Fall and False DawnsThe sound of shattering glass tore through the night air as Arthur and Vanessa crashed out onto the stone balcony, tumbling into a violent struggle over the heavy black detonator.

"Noah! Get your sister out of here!" Elena screamed, shoving Noah and Lily toward the secret corridor exit.
"I'm not leaving you!" Noah shouted back, grabbing a heavy brass fireplace poker from the floor of the ruined study.
"Go!" Elena roared with a maternal ferocity that left no room for argument. She grabbed a heavy iron paperweight from the desk and turned to face the doorway just as armed guards in black tactical gear began pouring into the hallway from the grand staircase.
Noah grabbed Lily's hand, pulling his crying sister into the dark service shaft. Behind them, the sounds of chaos erupted into a full-scale warzone—gunshots echoing through the mahogany halls, shouts, and the shattering of priceless antiques.
They ran blindly through the labyrinth of walls, guided only by the dim emergency strips on the floor. Every breath burned in Noah's throat. His muscles screamed with exhaustion, but the image of Vanessa's finger resting on that detonator fueled his every step.
They burst out through a hidden latch in the floor of the ground-floor pantry, tumbling into the cavernous, industrial kitchen.
To their horror, the kitchen was already filling with a thick, acrid gray smoke.
"The gas lines," Noah choked out, coughing as the heavy smell of propane hit his lungs. "She actually did it. She rigged the house."
"Noah! Look!" Lily pointed toward the back courtyard glass doors.
Outside, flashing red and blue lights painted the lawn in frantic strokes. Sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder by the second. State police cruisers and fire trucks were swarming the wrought-iron gates of the estate.
"We made it," Lily sobbed in relief, running toward the glass doors.
"Wait, Lily, stop!" Noah yelled, lunging forward just in time.
A heavy iron security shutter slammed down from the top of the door frame with a deafening crash, blocking their exit completely. The locking mechanism beeped rapidly, a small digital screen flashing red: LOCKDOWN ENGAGED. SYSTEM OVERRIDE FAILED.
From the doorway behind them, a slow, mocking clap echoed through the smoke-filled kitchen.
Vanessa stood leaning against the doorframe. Her silk dress was torn, her hair wild, and a dark stain of blood smeared across her shoulder from the balcony struggle. But in her hand, she still held the detonator. Arthur was nowhere to be seen.

"Did you really think the police would save you, children?" Vanessa smiled, her eyes wild and bloodshot. "They don't know which gate to enter. And by the time they blast through the perimeter wall, this entire house will be a smoking crater."
She pressed the red toggle switch down.
